My friend/instructor has one. Love the sound, hate the large headstock. Sounds great through my 5F6A clone. 8)

Guess the headstock really doesn't affect the playability too much.

Instructor? You?

Actually the big headstock completly changes the tone and sustain of a strat

Mass=Sustain

Simple guitar physics

They are tonier than original headstocks

Leo Fender gave the strat the big Headstock and 3 bolt neckplate.
It was his last contribution to the stratocaster as he handed it to CBS
Many people dislike it and atribute it to CBS but it was actually Leo who did this.

I have seen countless Fender American Stratocasters in Guitar center used in perfect condition with case for about $600
That is affordable American
I also have seen every configuration there s-s-s, s-s-h, and h-h

Something to consider.

I just recently bought 2 new guitars and it is thrilling to register it but...
You can get more for your money used just buy where its been pro checked out and you can return it.

Yes in theory . Can you hear it ? Nor sure.

I have a big headstock original '70 Strat with no more sustain than 2 of my regular headstock strat. And one of them a 1995 American Standard have more sustain and sound better in many ways than the big headstock.

Well I think the Sustain is kind of tough to measure.

I run the same pickup in all my strats an Aged White Fender Hot Rod 16 Ohm Alnico 5 (Atomic in Black) I only take the weaker ones that have true readings of 15 Ohm or less 13 Ohm in my Deluxe. The weaker the reading the more Razor Sharp, the stronger the read the Fuzzier they get.
I frequently do comparisons side by side through a 100 watt tube amp at moderate club level...

The Highway 1 with same pickup had a more rounded full tone and was my best sounding.
The other guitarist ended up buying it he begged and begged.

You mean 16 K Ohms ( 16,000 ohms ) not 16 ohms. And 15 K ohms , 13K ohms.

This reading is a matter of number of turn AND size of the wire . Pickup tone is more than a ohms reading and magnets.

Well, I don't have a problem with more "tone" as long as it is good tone.

And agree that there are plenty of great used guitars out there. Just have to be patient and wait for the right ones to show up. (they show up much more often than good vintage amps.)

I never said I was a guitar hero either. I love to play though. (the cat usually disappears.)

I'm actually concentrating on blues now unlike my younger days when I used to jut flail away with whatever song.

The difference in mass between a large head on a Strat and the smaller head is minimal. Certainly not enough to cause any real difference in sustain. Pickup choice will have a much greater effect.

Yeah the K is a given sorry figured everyone just knew that.

And yeah we could disect it down to the atom on pickups, but A Fender Humbucker kinda sounds like a Fender Humbucker it just a little more saturation the higher you go.

Like a Gibson Humber Sounds Like a Gibson and a Dimarzio a Dimarzio and a Duncan a... You get the drift.

In my bands the biggest joke in the room when I bring a guitar in is when you gonna change the pickups.

Im kind of a shade tree expert lol.
