A Duncan 59 is the same kind of pickup same output you really wouldnt gain much.
A JB or Atomic would be a jump at double the output.

Hi,

What about the pots? All 250K?

I didn't say a Duncan 59. The Custom/59 Hybrid is totally different! :)

I am tempted to try the Fender Twisted Tele in my Tele neck again.

I doagree....real singles have more character. With my Tele, I want to try the Hot Tele Neck pickup which is a true single. In my new strat, I may want to try hotter, true Duncan singles.

Oh ok my bad I like to leave the pots 250k anymore
Dimarzio recomends 250k Volume 500k tone on strats nowadays and I just leave them alone.
Fender uses good pots, 500k tends to allow the pickup to over saturate and squeel a bit.

Pots depend on the guitar. If I have individual volume pots, I go all 500K pots. My SG, I use a 300K volume pot in the bridge and on my LP, all 500K. My Tele gets all 500K pots with my stacked single and Little 59. If I find my strat needs opening up, I will go all 500K! :)

I just got a HSS 2012 strat today. The neck/middle pickup is dead quiet. But the bridge humbucker is slightly noisy. So is middle/bridge . The only position that is totally quiet is neck/middle. Is that the split coil position? by the way, I got mystic blue with rosewood. Wow, is that pretty. lot of metallic in paint. way more than candy apple red.

The humbucker may be a little noisy due to an intentional mismatch of the coils. Position 2 (bridge + middle) splits the bucker so that you get a little more of the traditional Strat "quack" and should also be hum cancelling or mostly so. When I had my Lone Star, this position was totally noise free, but it would depend on how close the winding of the active coil and the middle pick up match each other.

Thanks greenstrat. that's exactly what I am hearing. bridge/middle is mostly hum cancelling.. neck/middle is dead quiet. have to get used to humbucker. sounds a little muddy or dark compared to fat 50's. I love this mystic blue color.

What is strat "quack"? I hear this all the time. Do you have a sound sample or youtube video with this quack?

I will try to make it work stock but I will say that my American Tele now rules since installing Duncan Little 59 and Vintage Stack! Much better than stock. My favorite guitar since the pickup swap.

Those are both pretty cool sounding. I did a Strat with those for someone and used it live here a year ago on stage at the Voodoo Lounge. Big Hall a lot of acts Like Marlyn Manson and The Black Crowes are playing there next week so it has a huge pro sound system and I could really open it up and listen, sounded really cool.

Good evening guys! I have had more time on my new strat. One thing I have learned is that you must treat each guitar differently. Just because a certain pickup or pot configuration works in one guitar, doesn't mean the same will work well in another guitar. Case in point, you would think with a Tele you would want 250K pots but with the Little 59 and vintage stack, I use 500K pots and the guitar is rich, big, warm and fantastic. However, I am tempted to buy a Duncan Hot Tele Rhythm neck pickup. Maybe I should have kept the Fender Twisted Tele neck pickup but I have been pretty happy with the Vintage Stack.

My 2013 HSS strat is totally stock right now. The Fat 50s are good, but I would prefer no noise and maybe a touch thicker or hotter, but I can easily live with these for a while. They are cleaner than the pickups that were in my 2003 Highway and raising them close to the strings certainly gives me more fat and girth or hotness.
I have no issues with pickup noise with singles since in most band settings, I don't notice it much.

So, the Fender Diamondback humbucker I really do not like. Sounds too bright, brash and doesn't have the fullness or clarity that the Lil 59 has in my Tele.
I want to check out maybe the Duncan 59/Custom Hybrid, Pearly Gates, 59, or maybe a Dimarzio.

Maybe I will start with finding a used Duncan Pearly Gates F-Spaced.

Yeah I know what your talking about I like those Fender Humbuckers for that reason.
They really matchup well to my 57 Classic Plus in my Les Paul Standard and my 498t in My Les Paul Custom.
I run the Fender Hot Rod which is just an aged white Atomic in both strats its got some kick. About the same as the Gibsons or a Duncan JB.

The "quack" is a frequency-induced envelope (EQ) thing that's created by combining the middle and bridge (and many times middle and neck) pickups of a Stratocaster.

You can tell how quacky a Strat is by setting up your amp to play clean. Lay your fretting hand fingers over the strings to mute them at about the 8th fret. Slowly strum the muted strings and listen to how the EQ changes on each string at it's struck. It sounds like you're rocking a wah pedal open as you move from the lower strings to the higher strings.

Here's an example:

Keep in mind that some Strats are quackier than others. Where you play on the strings matters. Lighter strings tend to help accentuate quackiness. Some players refer to this thing as "cluck."

The quack is something I would really never use, not my thing. Thanks for the example!

I lowered the Diamondback a lot and adjusted both singles, everything sounds good now.....or will at least hold me over for a while.

Quacky Strat sounds are excellent for funk and other musical styles.

Former Red Hot Chili Peppers' guitarist John Frusciante was associated with those funky quack tones for years.
