Hi guys,

I should have my 3 tone burst 2013 American Standard H-S-S strat with maple fretboard by late this week. I have aplyed a fewe, but none of the newer strats with a band.

This particular one, my friend at a music shop in Vermont, picked out for me.

I do not use a trem so I am either going to block the trem or just tighten it down so that it is essentially a hard tail. I have done this with any trem guitar.

I do have a question for you all! Would you suggest I keep the pickups stock? On my 2012 Telecaster I replaced the stock pickups with a Seymour Duncan Little 59 and Vintage stack with 500K CTS Audio Taper pots and they sound beefier than the stock pickups, plus the neck pickup is silent.

With the new strat, I have the Diamond Bacl humbucker and Fat 50s singloe coil pickups. Keep em stock? I want to leave it alone for some time but could see installing a 500K volume pot, like with my Tele. Also considering Seymour Duncan pickups and noiseless stacked singles.

Thoughts?

Rich,

I have a 2012 American Standard HSS. Same color too, 3-tone sunburst with maple pickguard. My advice to you, keep those Custom Shop 50s and that Diamondback Humbucker just as they are. Don't mess with a thing.

At least give yourself some time to play it as-is. I think you'll end up agreeing with me. If not, you can always swap 'em out later but for me, I don't see any reason...

Enjoy!

Thanks brother,

I think I prefer the Fender Atomic humbucker to the Diamond back.

Do you think I made a mistake swapping out the Twisted Tele neck pickup and Broadcaster bridge single in my Tele?

I am guessing knowing me, I will upgrade the Diamond Back to a Rio Grande or Seymour Duncan. The thing I like about something like Duncan stacked singles is that they are warmer and fatter than stock single coils.

I might see switching the Diamondback out, but you got to love those CS Fat 50s.

Also, the Diamondback has a split coil when you go to position 4 (or is it 2?). You'll probably want to keep that feature whatever you have for the humbucker...

@richedie

If you are looking for something different I suggest you to throw some good boutique pickups (Suhr, Bareknuckle, Tyler, Dr. Allen) for a comparison.

They're expensive but have an exceptional tonal response.

I also ordered a 2012 american standard strat HSS in Mystic blue with Rosewood board. should be getting it tomorrow. I wasn't aware of the split coil. How does that work? I am a sucker for blue colors. I already have a 2004 chrome blue strat and 2010 sonic blue FSR strat. I wonder how different Mystic is from chrome blue? guess I will find out soon. Thanks

I am Duncan freak, even after trying all the hand wound boutique guys. I was thinking of a Custom/59 Hybrid and stacked noiseless singles.

The Diamondback is very close to a Duncan 59 from my experience. I have an HSS.

Think Candy Apple Red, only blue... it has the same metallic look.

Hey I just ordered one too. 2012 American Standard HSS 3-tone sunburst maple fretboard Strat. Expecting delivery this week. Curious about how the Diamondback will sound through my Mesa MKIII. If not, I believe someone here suggested a Burstbucker 3 for pure tonal fatness. Anyone with experience on this p'up?

The fender Humbucker you have is an 8.5 ohm Alnico 5 very smooth and crunchy pickup with not alot of output.
It sounds great and for what your doing buy tightening the tremolo to rest on the body there is no need to change it out.
Its a fabulous pickup and just the right amount of sing a snarl.
It is perfectly suited for blues country classic rock and rock and roll and jazz.

There are only two other fender options the Fender Hot Rod Humbucker Pickup Alnico 5, 16 Ohm
This pickup is called many names Atomic for one depending on its color and the guitar its in.
It is best suited for Classic Rock Rock and Roll Hard Rock and Metal.
It was developed as a replacement for the Dimarzio Tone Zone in the Floyd Rose Classic Strats.

The last Fender Option is the Enforcer that can be obtained in aged white also.
It is a 24 ohm Ceramic High Output Humbucker
It is stock on the Custom Shop John 5
It is for Rock and Metal

Personally I would try whats in the guitar before you condem it. I did this to many times and missed out on some quality pickups.
I used to order a guitar and order new Dimarzios for it at the same time.
I have found that Gibson and Fender make some pretty nice pickups themselves.

Donnycraven,

Wow, thanks for the details on the Diamond back pickup. As long as it is not overly bright or harsh, I will keep it in the guitar. These days I try to keep many of my guitars stock.
However, I did replace the Broadcaster bridge in my Tele with a Duncan Little 59 and neck Twisted Tele with a Duncan Vintage stack and love them both!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am tempted to try the Atomic as well or go the Duncan route. The Atomic could be a good fit and I bet it splits better than the Diamond Back.
I know the guitarist for Primus LOVES the Atomic humbucker and uses it in all his strats!

My 90s cover band plays rock, hard rock, pop and grunge from the 90s.

My Gibsons and PRS are all stock. Only my Fender American Tele has after market pickups as I mentioned.

What if I did this? I prefer black pickups in a white pickguard strats and black knobs.
Atomic bridge pickup and two Fender Hot noiseless pickups or as suggested, Duncan C/59 Hybrid and Duncan stacks.

It has Fat 50s which can sound thin compared to something like the fat single coils in my 2003 Highway strat. I know people love the Fat 50s so I will give them a try. I hate swapping pickups and caps/pots because it is madenning. I hope I can live with the single coil hum as well. Usually not an issue with the band or with my ISP Noise Supressor. :)

The Fat 50s are really nice and if you run any kind of noise gate no need for stacked humbucking single coils.
I have a gate in the Line 6 I run and I really enjoy the true singles sound much more than the sound of stacked single they tend to have a synthetic sound.

The cover knob set runs $20 for black and an Atomic is easy to get on ebay its got more sting and bite to it for sure.
It will wire in the same and still be all Fender.

A Duncan 59 is the same kind of pickup same output you really wouldnt gain much.
A JB or Atomic would be a jump at double the output.
