When did stratocasters stop coming with the ashtray bridge cover? I have an '81 and am unsure whether it would have come with one or not... thanks

I could be wrong, but I thought that "regular" Stratocasters kept coming with the "ashtray" through the 1982 "Smith Strat" model. However, "The Strat" (made from 1980-1982) with that oversized brass bridge would not have had one.

Of course the Reissue models came with them; they also started in 1982, but every "modern" Strat starting with the 2-knob in 1983 has not had a cover.

Good to know... I want to grab one off ebay if I can then. The guitar is in superb condition and has all the hang tags, trem springs package... even the silica pack, but no ashtray. Would a reissue one work fine do you think?

I believe 1976 or '77 was the last year that FMI furnished each Strat with a bridge cover.

Ok... so I can just save my pennies then! It's unlikely I'd install it but I was thinking that if I sold it it would be nice to have all the case candy (even if it's a replacement part)

I wasn't really playing (and paying attention to this kind of stuff) until 1979 and I couldn't afford a Strat or Tele at that time. I would go with Arjay's recollection that it stopped by '77.

I thought I saw a Strat with the cover circa 1979-1980, but it could have been a copy like a Hondo II or something like that.

I remember the covers coming on them new when I was a kid
I didnt like them so I always looked and wondered could you take them off.
When I started shopping for a Strat at 15 none of the used ones ever had them on still.
I do remember looking at new 79s at the time but cant remember seeing any installed there either.

My first "Strat" in 1979, a Japanese Maya have this ashtray while my Classic 50s do not have, until I offered him!
