Warmoth would sell such a thing. But it should be stamped with a warmoth turtle in the neck pocket.

im about to order the wiring kit, but need some advice.

the kits im looking at have various pots i.e full size, or 10mm, or 18mm. I don't even know what this measurement is, I assume the length of the shaft

how do I know which I need ?

the kits im looking at are std les paul wiring kits, 500k pots, .33 caps is that right ?

slowly collecting the rest of the bits together

Image

wirking kit and some black pickup surrounds and ill have all the bits. still don't know what to do about painting the guitar.

a transparent finish was decided against earlier in the thread, with the 2 piece body not being joined in the middle, I cant live with the off centre join being visible. shame as the grain is really nice. also too late now as ive filled some areas so it will need painting over.

got a bit done tonight. the job I was dreading - drilling wiring routes for the pickup wires to the control cavity - went surprisingly well. as per usual, I had no 'specialist tools', using a cordless drill and a bit that looked about the right size would have to do.

I put the body in a vice, and weighed up which route would be best for the wires, and what angle I could get the drill bit at. I was restricted by the size of the drill head and the length of the bit meant that to get the neck humbucker wire into the trem cavity id have to drill from both ends and hope I meet in the middle. which almost never ends well. I also wanted to drill the hole in the same corner as the wire comes out of the pickup.

by a mixture of luck, a good eye, and just doing it, I got both holes to line up first time, and it even looks quite neat. the wire will run neatly along the side of the trem cavity. as good as I could have hoped

Image

I decided to take the bridge wire straight from the pickup cavity into the control cavity. again, same issues with restricted access and angle of attack, and wanting the hole to correspond with the pickup wire. a similar cocktail of luck, balls and educated guessing got this hole drilled :

Image

the final piece was bringing the neck wire from trem cavity to control cavity. again, I was quite badly restricted on where I could drill, probably more so than any other hole. however I got the job done. I also dressed the hole in the trem cavity to give the wire an easier bend out of the trem cavity.

Image

so all good pickup wiring all routed. my only slight concern is if the pot closest to the drilled holes gives some obstruction, but im not too concerned about that happeneing.

the other thing I almost got finished tonight was the heel chamfering.

ive never owned or even played a guitar with a chamfered heel, so I figured this was a good time to have a go. one immediate difference I noted was ive seen that on a guitar designed with a chamfered heel, sometimes the neckplate and area under the plate are also shaped. this leads to a much smoother transition from body height to the minimum height of the heel carve.

I had to keep my plate horizontal so I could only carve away at the area outside of the plate. this has resulted in a less graduated carve, but none the less it is very comfortable and certainly works. I still have to finish it off, smooth off the filler in the now redundant neck screw hole.

this took me about half an hour. I cut out a chunk or 2 with a junior hacksaw, then went to town with the P80 sand paper, some random files and my imagination, creating what I could envisage as the smoothest and most comfortable shape. again, I am quite pleased with the outcome.

ordered some black humbucker surrounds and also some tiny little disc magnets which I intend on using to keep the rear cavity plates on if possible instead of screws.

so some bits have turned up. unfortunately it turns out I was only ordering 1 pickup ring and not 2, so I don't have a pair quite yet   also I don't think im going to be able to use the jack socket I brought, in fact finding a suitable place for it due to the thickness of the wood it has to go through is proving difficult.

today I drilled pilot holes for the strap buttons and trem claw screws. I also had to drill the tuner holes out a little bit to take the bushes ive brought. all fits together nicely, but for now theres no point properly putting everything together as the body needs paint.

sooo

have been playing around with colours. my original patterned fabric plan is on the backburner for now i think, just not sure how best to go about getting the pattern on the guitar.

so now im looking at solid colours, although I would like to try get some metallic/pearlescent/flake mix just because its an opportunity to use it over a plain gloss finish. I am yet to decide on the control knobs ill be using as I still don't really know what type of pots I need.

I don't really want to draw instant "black beauty" comparisons, but its hard to ignore such a perfect colour combo.

bear in mind when looking at these knobs can be changed, and my neck is a lot yellower than the one pictured. I also may or may not utilise some 'faux binding'.

Since those are 4 wire HB's, I would suggest Push/Pull pots so that you can switch between single coil and HB and a myriad of colors by mixing the variations……

You have many options available just in picking out pots and which wiring schematic you choose….. All without drilling additional holes…

Cheers...

Moochy…forgot to ask… Have you drilled out for your jack…. ?? If not, you may want to consider using a stereo jack which does not require that outer plate in your pics and will also offer some more options as far as wiring….

There's a couple of really great books for wiring variations ……
Just make sure you have decided on what set-up before you begin to wire up and drill out the body….

I am yet to drill for the Jack socket. The pups are splittable, but to be honest I had a les paul with splittable pups and I didn't use them, and sold the guitar to replace it with something a bit more fenderish - this strat. I don't gig at the moment and I have plenty of pup option on my other guitars, so will be leaving this with standard wiring.

All I really need to know is which size pots I need, as I'm not sure how to determine that. Thanks for your help.

Hb's need 500k pots, but as far as the shaft sizing, that has to do with the thickness of the inside route surface to the top surface. Optimal sizing would be so when the Vol / tone knobs are on they sit just a couple mm off of the top surface and thus hide the washer and nut….
That you have to measure, but if you go to a site like http://www.lmii.com or http://www.allparts.com they should have a wide variety of pots for your application…. Contact them they can also guide you to your particular application…

Even though you may not use the option of coil switching, you can also wire it up for in / out phase…. Just consider versatility before you make a final decision, it's nice to have options even if you rarely use them...

thanks for your help.

im now looking at paints, and my best chance of finding something a bit out of the ordinary that I want to use is car paints. guitar shops are great is you want your guitar to look like it has a factory original colour, I don't though. I love when fender do FSR's in funky colours, so that's what im going for.

using car paint for the colour layer, should I use car products for the primer and lacquer layer ? do I even need lacquer if I can polish the colour coat ?
