Hi foodimages,

Here is a start, pictures of cross sections of guitar necks showing the various shapes, the "U" shape being the most "hand-filling", thickest shape, while the "C" shape is the slimmest. Slim and thick referring to the distance from the fret board to the back of the neck.

The radius is the amount of curvature of the fret board, the higher the number, the flatter the fret board. Typically, the smaller radius, more curved, such as 7.25", is more comfortable for making chords and requires higher action to prevent fretting out when bending strings, while the larger radius, flatter, such as a 12", can have lower action and is more conducive to easier string bending.

But really, you will have to try out different shapes and radii to know which feels best to you.

Welcome to the Forums. To amplify and expand upon what shimmilou has posted, access the Custom Shop website>How to order>
-you'll find a 'scan' portraying different neck cross-sections and descriptions plus a narrative you can draw guidance from.
>download quote sheet
pg.2 you'll find a list of neck shapes which will show you the range of shapes Fender has to offer.

With respect to the Stratocaster, shop them both in the products section [reading specs] and the stores to find physical examples of these to handle. The one severe departure from most of the necks is on the Clapton which has a real sleek v-profile. The most common neck used on Fender guitars is the 'modern C', which you can find on the American Standard as an example.

The "Clapton" profile was patterned after the neck from an old Martin acoustic guitar which was extensively used by old slowhand during the 1970s and early-to-mid 1980s.
