Just bought a new American Special.
I have a question about this guitar.
The bridge (not the saddles) is higher on the low E then on the high E (more space between the metal of the bridge and the wood of the guitar body, you can see more of what ever the material is that the bridge floats on).

Is this the way it should be?

That's got a vintage bridge, with six screws, right? It floats on those six screws.

Not really. It should be set so that, when not under tension from the strings or springs it can sit flat on the body. Then, you would balance the sping/string tension so that it either stays flat against the body (if that's what you want) or so that it floats (so you can both drop the pitch of the strings and increase it).

If it is higher on one side than the other, it might cause problems with uneven - possibly even accelerated - wear.

I'd take it back to wherever you bought it from and ask them to sort it out.

ok, I was afraid of that now that I look at it closer some of the screws are not tightened down as far as others.

that'll explain it. Don't be tempted to tighten them under tension! Less of a big deal than on a two-post vibe, but still not advisable...

back to the shop with it.

either bring it back to the store where you got it. or loosen the string and tighten down the screws. The loosen the middle 4 a little bit. About 1 turn or so. This is "one" of the ways to set it up. I use 5 springs to keep the bridge flat. I dont use the trem much at all though

Just take it back and let the store fix it.
