I just got a '68 Strat from my uncle and I don't know much about it but it has a hardtail bridge and has this terrible paint job feels like orange peeled spray paint, but it is supposedly the original paint but I would like to refinish it same color, black, but in a gloss. Best way to do this? I don't want a real thick finish so it can relic nicely

Hang on, you've been given guitar with its original, naturally aged finish, but want to refinish it and do so in a way that it can relic all over again? Are you planning to do that off the bat, or just let time take its toll?

Can you share pictures of what you have?

Send us some picture before you do some big mistake. Lost is value and tone with poor job paint.

Better to keep original if paint is original , you must be sure .

thanks for taking interest, I don't know how to post pics on here yet lol, but if this is the original finish it looks bad IMO, I love the look of a beat up Strat but this looks like someone else did this, not factory, I will try and post pics.

and as for the question about the refinishing, I would just like to refinish it a standard gloss black but keep it thin and I do plan on letting time do the work, not purposely age it, I would like it to age and get its own battle scars with me playing and gigging with it

If it is truely a 68 Strat, DO NOTHING until you post pics here. Then we can give you some advice. If the finish is Original...you would be ruining the vintage value of your guitar by possibly thousands of dollars. The finish is only original ONCE.

Pic instructions
Step 1 Upload your pics to a free pic hosting site.
Step 2 Copy the IMG Link code
Step 3 Paste into your post
Step 4 Highlight what you pasted and then hit the Img button above
Step 5 Hit preview and see your post with pics.
Step 6 Hit Submit

No...You have to upload them to an image hosting site, like Photobucket or Flikr (I think I left that part off, sorry). That is what I meant in Step 1.

Looks fake to me, not a real '68 IMO.

If it were real (which I doubt), definitely not the original paint job, bridge and saddles not original, headstock decal is missing some details, the engraving on the neck plate looks like it wasn't done by Fender either. I'm not even sure about the plastic covered wires on the pups, but it was around '68 that they switched to the plastic covered wires. :?

well I would hope it was a real one lol, not that I plan on selling it, but on Fender's archive list of serial numbers the 200000's to 300000's ran from '68 to '69 so idk, its been in my family for 20+ years and someone else had it before my uncle for certain, the electronics are rough inside but it sounds good, but don't worry guys I only paid $150 so I didn't dump a lot of money into it to find out maybe that its fake

I have seen this type of saddle before on them it looks pretty legit for age and all.
It has been refinished pretty sure.
It should be taken to someone that deals with Vintage Fenders to get a true Natural looking Relic Finish

There were two types of cast saddles from this time period and that looks like one of them.

I have seen both on strats

I think it might be younger than 68 though because decal and saddles say 70s to me

The paint that you see was made famous in the 70s by the Ovation electic guitars the Deacon and the Preacher. they had this finish and everyone liked it at the time.
