Hi all,

I have a chance to buy a second-hand Strat, although I would like to make sure I'm not buying a fake one. Can you help? The serial number is N6190289 (not sure about the 8 though, the photo is a bit blurry), which apparently means it's a 1996 model.

Also, I'm not really sure if it's the American Standard or American Special one?

I would really appreciate any advice on this :) You can lookup photos posted by the current owner here: http://imgur.com/a/yMk6Y

Cheers!

looks legit to me. Pickguard may be a replacement, may not have come with humbucker originally(looks like a duncan), but body and neck appear to be legit from what I see.

I would agree with Arnold on this one. It kinda looks like it could be an American Deluxe Fat Strat...but it would only have one string tree, so it does not fit any Fender guitars I know, so think a mod has been done with the pickguard and HB.

It appears that the neck and tremolo bridge were taken from a 1996 MIA Strat and put into a crimson red transparent 1998/99 MIA Deluxe body.

Someone had dropped an aftermarket LoneStar pickguard with two Texas Special singles and a Duncan Pearly Gates Plus on it.

It's not a genuine American Strat but a fake partscaster.

The American Deluxe HSS Strat doesn't have string trees.

I've seen a few Deluxe HSSes with a string tree and a regular nut but in reality these photos were photoshopped.

None of these guitars are equipped with string trees as the LSR Roller Nut make their use redundant.

It could be legit. I had one from around 95. The pickguard etc is definitely aftermarket.
Heres the one I owned but I added an lsr and left the string trees for the hell of it.
Yeah I know Chromy a bit silly of me!
Had the swimming pool route and I found the original pickups a bit boomy.

Crimson Transparent didn't came into surface until 1998!

But Crimson Burst was an option for the American Series Strats and a few Pluses from circa 95/96!

John C, we need your help! :D

That depends. Crimson Transparent didn't show until 98 - your're right on that one.

However, Crimson Burst was on prior models. To me, this guitar is showing a burst on it, however hard to tell because if it a plus/deluxe type body, it should have an ash veneer...

Need to see better pics. But yes a partscaster all the same. :)

Edit- looking more like a pre-locking bridge plus deluxe body to me with a 96 american std neck & lone star pickguard

I may be able to put my hands on this guitar this week, I can take better pictures then. What details you want me to take photos of so you can tell me more about this guitar?

Thanks for all the replies so far!

By the way, the owner says it's a "Fender American Stratocaster" (not specifying if it's a Deluxe, Standard or Special) in Metallic Candy Apple Red color.

Pickups:
Bridge: Seymour Duncan SH4-Jeff Beck
Middle: Fender Custom Shop 69 (from Gilmour's set)
Neck: Fender Custom Shop Fat 50's (from Gilmour's set)

Do you think this guitar is worth buying overall?

Colour looks more like crimson transparent than candy apple red.

The duncan SH-4 JB bridge p/u is a trembucker.

I was never sure of the color of mine.
It was a see thru red with a burst on the edges under the red.
This was in gold and you may be able to see some in the chip near the bottom strap button. :D

Your guitar is a crimson burst American Strat. Alder body with ash veneers.

Hi guys; sorry, I was off-line most of yesterday.

chromeface - it is only that one kind of dark photo that looks crimson or crimson burst to me; the other photos tzarus posted just look candy apple red, and that was a standard color for at least the Lone Star Strat in 1996.

It could have started life as a Lone Star Strat or it could have started life as an American Standard from 1996. If it started life as a Lone Star then all the previous owner had to do was swap pickups; if it started life as an American Standard then the pickguard is aftermarket as well.

tzarus - send the serial number to Fender (consumerrelations@fender.com) and they should be able to verify which model it is.
