After seeing JohnC's comment I stand corrected the pickguard could very well be early lonestar.
I will also ask Fender re the color of the one I had and post a followup if I get a reply. :D

Partscaster, maybe, but 'fake' - no. To me, fake means that Fender had nothing to do with it. This to me looks to be all Fender - just not all one Fender.

It's a nice looking guitar. If the price is right, it plays right, and you are buying to play it rather than as an investment, then don't let the partscaster label put you off.

Sometimes there is a paper serial in the pool route.
The first part is the body type and the last part the color e.g xxxx etc -728 would be crimson burst. If you end up getting the guitar you could chek that :D

It appears that it is a partscaster indeed. The specification says:

Quote:
Pickups: 3 American Standard Strat Single Coils

and this one has a humbucker. I'm new to this, can you change a single coil to humbucker without more serious modifications to the body?

On some strats yes, on others, no - it depends on the original routing of the body, of which strats have four main flavours:
- swimming pool (i.e. a big hole);
- three single coil 'vintage';
- HSS - humbucker in the bridge and two single coils; and
- HSH - humbucker, single, humbucker.

If the body of this is an original 1997 American Standard body, I believe you could expect to find a swimming pool rout, which means it would have only required a new pickguard and no woodwork to fit the humbucker.

If anyone else knows different, please correct me on that!

Well fender got back to me re the American std I had and as Chromeface mentioned it is crimson burst.
To me it looks very similar in color to the one you are looking at except for the pickguard etc. It has a metallic burst edge to it.
I generally think of a strat as a partscaster if the neck and body are not from the same guitar and any other severe mods but small changes only as "non original" and as such not a big concern, others may have a different point of view. :D
