Does anyone else think that fender should offer a guitar where you can pick what goes on it?
So you can order a new american standard strat with say a reverse CBS headstock, floyd rose trem, and an angled humbucker in the bridge position or a nylon string strat with a piezo system.

Welcome to the Forum.

I really don't think that would be cost efficient for Fender.

Paul reed smith guitars does pretty much that, except that the guitar can cost from 3k to just over 4k. I think it would be cool if Fender could make them to order rather than charging 5k for a custom shop guitar, but then again they are really good workers there.

What you could do is look for seperate parts and build your own. Go to Warmoth.com. They also offer pre-cut bodies that they can paint for you. If you really want that logo on your headstock look on ebay for Fender necks, tehy usually have them, old or new.

Another thing they oughta do is stick a program on the site where you can design a guitar lik ethat and have the price on it. Come to think of it they could start a branch in Mexico or someplace where they make them to order rather than making them all in Cali and go bust due to too much output.

The problem with a custom choice guitar is that now the manufacturer has to keep a huge overhead of every possible part for every possible configuration. Then they have to spend the man hours to create a one of a kind guitar, retool, make another guitar, retool....you get my drift.

The way any manufacturer can control prices is to crank out a lot of the same product. As soon as you have to stop the line for a part change you've raised prices.

I hate to suggest another brand on the Fender forums, but try Carvin. They're pretty customizable, and for not too much bank.

That was my first thought. They do run the model that the OP described. I doubt that Carvin has too much market share.

Actually, Fender ought to buy them, then they would have a low cost custom cabability!

I have actually used the Carvin site to buy a lot of replacement gear and other stuff as well. Nothing against fender but it's a great site and the products are pretty good as well. I can understand why Fender may not follow the same concept but yeah it sure would be cool

It's a great idea. And if it sounds like an impossible dream, it is actually how you buy any new car these days. Each one that comes down the assembly line is put together differently, according to the customer's specs.

In the meantime there is the Custom Shop, or, Blade, or Tom Anderson, or James Tyler (love the neck, hate the headstock). And there's a world of individual luthiers out there, most of whom can do customer spec S-types. And not always for silly money.

Watch out! Ya gotta keep abreast of the market, Fender...
