So I was talking with someone about a '71 Strat with a small headstock. I quickly questioned this, but the person told me the that "the dates matched" and that Fender didn't like throw anything away, so "it completely possible."

I'll agree that Fender never throws anything away, but a small headstock neck on a '71 Strat?

Has anyone ever heard anything like this?

It was a music store I called. I saw on their website that they had '70s era Strat and the guy asked, "me which one?"

Curious, I asked, "What do you have?"

He told me they had a '77 and a '71 with the small headstock. Now I'm pretty knowledgeable about such things, but this was something new to me. I don't think it's a BS story, maybe a BS guitar. Given the right materials I could take a bunch of Fender parts and make a very convincing copy that most people wouldn't catch.

I don't mind if stuff on a guitar is messed with, but just be honest with me. It's a fake Strat? OK, just let me know what I'm getting into.

About a year ago I found an old beat up '79 Strat. I mean SRV and Rory beat up, but I didn't care. This thing played like butter, sounded great and had that 2AM bar vibe I love. Since I knew that pups from the '70 never sounded this good and there was a push/pull pot bipass knob, that this guitar had been altered. So I told the guys in the store to look under the hood. Sure enough all the electronics were changed out and the pups were some old Van Zant pups. In the end I got the guitar for a song.

No, I just don't see it either. The last small headstock Strat was done in what - late 1965 or maybe early 1966? I don't see a small headstock Strat neck sitting around more than sometime in 1966.

Maybe they have a Smith Strat that somehow got a 1981 serial number and the guy misspoke calling it a 1971. Maybe it could be a '71 with a '65 or '66 neck?

There are no small pegheads in 1971; the last small headstock Strat dates from circa 1966.

That's unadulterated bull fecal matter. Part of CBS's shtick were the large headstocks to make the name stand out more and to differentiate them from Leo's product.

But if you read it on the web, it must be true. - NOT!!!

Being as I am pretty knowledgeable about Strats, I agree with all of you about this. I'm inclinded to believe that the guitar is a later made guitar, and they just got their dates wrong. I'd love to get a look at this Strat.

Thanks you all for your incite.

I would love to have seen a phot of this guitar on the internet. I'm very good at spotting fakes. Sadly the only photo I saw was of a black Strat from the '70s. This is what prompted my phone call.
