Hi,

I'm looking at to possibly purchase this guitar. The guy says it's an early 90's American Standard, but looks to be an 82 to me, but a few things seem off.

I've only got these picture to go off. The tuners look wrong and the truss rod should be covered right? Case looks right. Serial and decal look like an 82. Is this a real 82? What is a good price for it?

Thanks all!

SixBladeKnife - you are right to wary of this one. The only thing Fender about it is the old molded case.

Most 1982 Strats were the "Smith Strat" model - they would have the small headstock (the odd shape, not a vintage shape) and have the truss rod access t the neck heel. Any 1982s that weren't a "Smith Strat" would have been either "The Strat" (the upscale model with all the brass/gold hardware) or it would have been the same as a 1981 with the large headstock, 3-bolt neck, and bullet truss rod.

You picked up on the truss rod acces and tuners - those look more like what was found on lower-end Strat copies. The serial number font isn't close to what was available in 1982 either, and it's a large headstock with a 4-bolt neck. Bottom line is it is some kind of strat copy with a fake Fender headstock decal and serial number.

I agree with John - if it is an '82, it would be one of the last of the big headstock ones (I read that they ran out of those necks sometime in 1983). Some had three bolt, some four, so that's not a gimme, but I agree with John - they were bullet truss rods - this has no bullet, just a gaping, unplugged hole.

The logo is the right style, but it looks wrong to me - almost too gold somehow, and just not quite in the right place. Neither of those things are for definite though.

I'd guess it is a dressed up Squier SE - full thickness body, with a large headstock. Easily 'wolfed' with a decal transplant. Can you get to its guts? That would give a better idea. I wouldn't buy it.

Thanks for your help guys. Crisis averted.

I'll just pass on it since it's an hour drive anyways. Not like I need another guitar anyways, just feeling greedy today I guess :D

You guys are awesome!

Only if they weren't Fender guitars - that's not a Fender neck; at best it's a Squier neck with a fake Fender decal.

Is that Gilmoour's black Strat with a different neck? I know the guitar has had several necked. In fact I'd say that there is little left of the original guitar, excpet maybe the body.

That looks like the Black Strat before any mods - at one point it was a bone-stock '68 or '69 Strat. Paris - you are correct, the only thing left original on the Black Strat is the body. Even the two Fender single coils are from a later black Strat (probalby a late '71 or a '72 with the 3-bolt neck/bullet truss rod adjuster).

Neck wise, there have been at least 6 necks on the Black Strat including a couple made for him by Grover Jackson in the late 70s/early 80s. It currently has a neck from one of Gilmour's 1983 AV '57 Strats.

The One in that picture I believe is on the wall now in the Rome Hard Rock Cafe.

Dave had also a sunburst rosewood neck '63 if my memory serves.

The neck you're talking about came from the Olympic White AVRI '57, which served as a backup to the Candy Apple Red Strat.

Here's a photo of the Olympic White Strat before the EMG mod.
