I just bought a new MIM Stratocaster. I have 4 Strat type guitars, (2 G&L's 2 Fenders). All of my Strats have the trem blocked. I decided to use the "whammy" bar on my new MIM strat and I am wondering if there is suppose to be a spring in the hole were the trem arm inserts into the bridge like my MIA strat has. Also how tight should the trem arm be screwed into the bridge. My 2012 MIA Strat has tape over the hole to prevent the spring from dropping out. My MIM Strat does not have tape over the hole or a spring.

The MIM Strats did not come with the trem-arm spring, at least initially (they may be provided now). If your's is lost or misplaced, replacements are easily found on Ebay and at the better-stocked guitar shops. I think they come five in a pack for ten bucks.

Many times, if you put one of those springs in the hole of the MIM Strats, when you screw in the bar, it will just push the spring right out the back of the block. :o

MIM Strats from 2006 forward will hold a spring they have the larger bridge block. The older MIM's have a hole drilled straight through the skinny block.

Either I never understood the purpose of this spring or I did something wrong because it never worked for me. The arm has always been fine dangling around though.

I'm sure you understand that the spring exerts a back pressure against the handle causing a resistance to rotation.

Should my MIM Stratocaster have a spring in the tremlo or not have a spring? When I bought my MIM Strat two days ago the tremelo arm was not inserted in the guitar. There was no tape over the tremelo hole. I'm not sure if there should be a trem spring in my MIM Strat.

Pop a spring out of one of your MIA's and have a go at the MIM with it. Let us know what you find.
