Personally I'd opt for an American Standard version of this axe!

So would I if they did one!! ;)

I have to say I'm warming to the standard pickups. I'm playing through a Blackstar HT-5TH and after fiddling with the settings can get a REALLY nice sound out of it.
So here's the super budget Sambora Strat with a VERY simple mod. I'm really pleased with the results to be honest.

Looks awesome! I think I might pick up the tobacco burst version, without the Floyd Rose. Not sure yet, though; I'm just a beginner. Still batting around the idea of picking up a used Squier or MIM strat off Craigslist.

YEP :P

The only pro of this guitar: it comes with the original Floyd Rose and not the cheaper Special and licensed types you might find on the Blacktops and regular production Standards.

Personally I'd opt for an American Standard version of this axe!

Ok I'm a little confused about this one, either they aren't coming with Floyd Rose Originals, or my Strat has a Floyd Rose Original bridge on it. Hard to tell, however my Strat has the same bridge as all the other Plus Top Strat Locking Trem models I've researched on the net.. Or they are being shipped with FR Specials and the "FR Original" is a typo.

Here's the bridge on mine. Different to the bridge on a Blacktop HH Strat with Locking Trem. Perhaps this is an Original? But this is the same as a plus top:

And here is a Plus Top Floyd Rose, which is the same bridge as on my Floyd Rose Standard Strat:

I wouldn't say it's the only pro, but this is a great feature. I had initially assumed that the only difference between the regular Standard and Plus Top was the top. I've never owned a FR equipped guitar, but the fact that this guitar comes with an OFR is encouraging.

..and here is a Floyd Rose Special bridge found on a Blacktop HH Locking Trem Strat:

I actually didn't realise it has an original Floyd Rose. Bonus!

I think the difference with the ones in your pics Blertles is that the one in the first pic is a licensed FR (you can see it written in front of the fine tuners) and the one in the second is a FR special. I'm no expert, by any means, but my understanding is that both of these aren't as good as the original. Could be totally wrong though.

And in the case of these two models, one is recessed into a shallow cavity routed for the purpose, the other sits on the face of the guitar like a regular trem. As well as a few tiny design differences, such as hex or slot tops to the pivot posts.

It's fascinating how important people find these things to be.

Are the bridge plates made from different grade metal? I don't know, but I guess that could genuinely matter, as far as wear to the knife edges goes.

Cheers - C

The Floyd Rose Special is a cheaper die-cast zinc alloy & coated design and is mellower and prone to wear at the knife edge and saddles where the string is clamped. You can see the difference with the quality of the saddles and hex screws between a special and an original, which cast steel. The Standard Strat is spec'd to have a Genuine FR Special, not a licensed one which should be the exact same as the Blacktop Locking Trem HH.

I like the recessed Trem on the blacktop, which for Mexico is a first I've seen as it seems Japan recess their locking Trem bridges. It allows for raising the pitch, which to me- is the right way for a Floyd to be used, however each to their own for preferences.

However, the Plus top is Specd to have a FR Original. But what I don't understand is why my Strat has what seems to me a FR Original Trem. The Trem is identical, except for the 'Licensed for Under Patents.." and a little motiff etched near the hole for the trem bar.
So the other specs of the Strat with the exception of the flame veneer and maple fingerboard is all the same. Perhaps an irregularity here, or someone just didn't get the true specs right on the website.

Anyways, I'm curious about this and I'm gonna do some digging to find an answer..

Hi Blertles: I'm getting a bit lost amongst all the guitars under discussion on this thread. Which Floyd was yours spec'd to have? From your pics yours indeed looks identical to Nik73's.

Cheers - C

Mine is spec'd on the Website to have a Floyd Rose Special, which should look like the Trem on the pewter Strat above..

..to me it looks the same as Nik73's also. A conundrum lol :) I'm going to research into that, because to throw a spanner in the works- all of these trems are different to the trems on the Floyd Rose website.

My apologies here- I've edited that previous post a few times :)

WOW!!! What a terrific job you've done, man! Richie would be very proud... 8)

I like those growing stars a lot! :)

Nice idea to have a guitar blending the features of both USA Artist and MIM Standard versions of Richie's signature axes.. :P

Are you GASsing for a MIM Black Paisley Standard HSS and doing the same Sambora treatment on it?

Thanks man! I'm really pleased with it and it's sounding better as it wears in. If the black paisley had a maple neck, I might be tempted! But I've spent about £3k on Strats in the last 9 months!
This one really is fantastic for the price though.

Well, I finally picked one of these up. They're very scarce in the UK, most stores have to order them specially. I have to say I'm very impressed with the finish, looks lovely. I'm going to do a bit of a Sambora conversion with it, a little at a time.
Really like the stock sound though and the HSS is very versatile, but the humbucker is just a little muddy. That'll be the first change for a PAF Pro. ;) The neck will be the big/expensive part!

That looks absolutely stunning!, Really nice flame/colour etc, is the build quality/finish as good as it looks in the pic's?, did GAK have any more in stock? (can you please PM me details) I've been waiting a long time for Fender to re-release a Floyd/Maple necked Strat,
@ Blertles your Floyd is a 'Ping', reportedly a good quality licensed Floyd, so maybe the plus tops are shipping with these also, have a look round the web for info.

cheers, :D
