I'm loving that Fender have put a variation of this model however I still believe that it deserves an MIA version too with a Floyd Rose 'Original' bridge (instead of the inferior 'special'), Jumbo Frets, and PAF Pro bridge and Fat 50's mid & neck pickups.

Surely if there is a market for a B-bender tele, then there is a bigger market for this.

I think a Seymour Duncan '59 Trembucker is more suitable for the Fat 50's pair. Fender did this incredible sounding configuration with their successful USA Custom Showmasters many years ago.

Well, I finally picked one of these up. They're very scarce in the UK, most stores have to order them specially. I have to say I'm very impressed with the finish, looks lovely. I'm going to do a bit of a Sambora conversion with it, a little at a time.
Really like the stock sound though and the HSS is very versatile, but the humbucker is just a little muddy. That'll be the first change for a PAF Pro. ;) The neck will be the big/expensive part!

Gosh, really? Google seems to be finding plenty - GuitarGuitar.co.uk claim to have all the models in stock, just to pick the first name off the pile.

Cripes, are you going to do the stars? Wow - please keep us posted on how you get on with that. I feel especially interested in your personal Sambora quest, Nik. Congrats on the new axe. :)

A-a-a-a-anyway. I've said it before, I think these Standard Plus Tops look about the best bang for the buck in the catalog just at the moment. I can't believe how good they are at this price point. Ensenada is giving Corona some good healthy competition, it seems!

I'm tempted...

Cheers - C

Thanks my friend. Typical, Guitar Guitar must have just got this one in! Got mine from GAK. Fantastic service. I'm surprised how nice the finish is for a Mexican guitar. Not quite the level of my CS mind! ;)
I'm actually going to try a super budget effort for the stars first! ;) See how that goes.

Don't forget to swap the stock single coils for Texas Specials and slap an Eric Clapton circuit with a midboost bypass toggle switch!

For the custom Sambora neck with the growing stars a sculpting of the neck heel is required to accommodate an American Deluxe neck plate. Same thing for the lower and upper cutaways.

Hey chromeface. Hee-hee - in the friendliest possible tone I am going to beg for that sculpted heel thing not to be done! :)

We will never manage to perfectly match the finish on the Plus Top, and it would be such a shame to spoil it.

Nuttin' wrong with a regular Strat heel. Leave well alone, would be my respectful suggestion.

Cheers - C

Yeah, I'm nowhere near brave enough to start messing with the body shape! My CS has a sculpted heel and I do like it, but not that much.
Chromeface, I will be doing the Texas Specials and TBX kit, but, like I said, not all at once. PAF Pro first and then the TS. I was actually wondering about getting some Tex-Mex's as they're nearly half the price. Bad move?

The dimarzio evolution is also a good choice, kinda like a PAF pro but with a slightly more output and slightly less bass than the PAF. I find harmonics just scream out real nice too..

I have to admit that you can't do a lot with the standard bridge humbucker though.. A little muddy indeed. How do you find the single coils?

Of course no.

Tex-Mex are a good start as they sound close to TX Specials.

I suggest you to buy those Tex-Mex pickups and leave the stock circuit alone for a first time.
You can upgrade to Texas Specials and active TBX/Mid Boost circuitry with bypass switch later.

As I said in a recent post there's unnecessary to rout the body for the Fender Elite printed circuit board. Inserting the PCB in the control cavity would suffice.

I'd be interesting to know- does your new Strat have a two piece body? These have got to be some of the best bodies to come from Mexico, not to mention the bursts. The dark red is all around the edge of the guitar, not covering up the belly cut.. Notice the two piece on the back., mostly a standard series sunburst would be 6-8 pieces of alder with an alder veneer top with the belly carve blacked out

Standard brown burst Strat:

Thanks chromeface. The only thing with that is the cost of doing it twice. I'm actually pretty impressed with the rest of the guitar, great quality for the price. Even the term stays in tune nicely. The only thing I want to change is the pickups. I might just go with the Texas Specials from the off, though it would make sense to do the TBX at the same time while everything is off.

Thanks Blertles, I'll have a look at an evolution. I love harmonics myself so you have my interest. ;)
I think a good way to describe the single coils is "standard". That's probably a bit unfair, but I've been spoilt with the Abby handwounds in my CS. They're definitely better than the humbucker and sound pretty good clean, better than I was expecting.

As far as the body goes, forgive my ignorance, but how do you tell? Obviously I can see the difference between your two pics and mine looks the same as the cherryburst body?

YEP :P

The only pro of this guitar: it comes with the original Floyd Rose and not the cheaper Special and licensed types you might find on the Blacktops and regular production Standards.

Personally I'd opt for an American Standard version of this axe!
