Hi Guys,

So I bought this Strat 16 years ago and to be honest, I didn't care about what model it was, I just liked the sound and the feel (and the look). But now I need to sell it and I can't for the life of me figure out what model it is. Everything is completely original. Any help is much appreciated!

Thanks, Jake

Serial Number: N6142341

If I'm remembering correctly this model was called the Stratocaster Special - it was kind of the forerunner of the MIM Deluxe series that is out now. They were only made for about 1-2 years sometime across 1995-1997ish. There was also a Tele model with a neck position humbucker.

You could email the serial number to Fender (consumerrelations@fender.com ) and they should be able to verify the model for you.

Thanks John for the info! The date is right, I bought it in 1997 (if I remember correctly). I'll try that email.

***UPDATE***
Fender emailed that they have a ton of emails and will take some time getting back to me. Anyone else have some ideas?

That is exactly what that was a Strat Special Mexican I bought one of those for one of my kids.
They wanted a strat to play and it sat forever ended up selling it to a guy at work.
He did alot of mods to it but thats what it is, mine was a 95.

That's what I'd thought too: N= ninties US made (and/or maybe 93 MIJ). But I read that these things were US parts bin, built in Mexico. Otherwise, MIMs usually kick off with an 'M', but from my own experience with a MIJ guitar... Fender serials are a dark art!

Hi Guys,

Well I heard back from Fender and here are some of the details:

Model Name: Strat® Special
Manufactured: 08/1996
Series: Special/Deluxe Series
Pickups: 2 Special Design Strat Single Coils (Neck & Mid), 1 Special Design Humbucking Pickup (Bridge)
Pickup Switching: 5 Position Blade, 2 Position Mini Toggle Humbucking Coil Tap Switch
INTRODUCED: 1994
DISCONTINUED: 1/1997
Source: Mexico

So according to Fender it's a MIM. What was throwing me off is the serial number. According to the Fender website (and other searches I made) serials that start with N6 were made in CORONA, CA whereas MIM models start with a M.

Thanks to everyone for the info and help, and thanks John C for the email link to Fender!

'Do not concern yourself, Officer Callahan.' Once they retired all the guys who were pooling their Quaaludes, the serial numbering began to improve.

We have no data to support your contention at this writing.
