I've seen two different neck plates on two different 2002 American Standard Strats.
One just has the big F, and the other has the F, and says Corona California under it.

Which is correct?

Are you sure they are all " 2002 American Standard " series ??

In 2002 series are ;

American Vintage
Classic series ( have a big F ) frontline catalog page 65
American Deluxe series
Hot Rod American
American special
Deluxe series
American series
Standard series
Artist series

Where do you see American Standard ???

I've never seen a model designation anywhere on any Strat I've seen.
I was told they were American Standards, and the serial #s indicate 2002.
The headstocks are consistent with an American Standard,
as well as the 2 point tremlo.

First Fender guitar are not easey to identify for expert too , to many models .

Headstock on modern Stratocaster are "always " looking the same.
Model name are never printed , You should look in archive , catalog etc.

Here where is the error

"S" it not 2002 guitar , it is a 1976 to 1981

2002 must start with Z
You need full serial number to know the year . At least ; letter + first digit AND how many digit after.

Look there ;
www.fender.com/support/articles/u-s-ins ... ct-dating/

There are Japaneese made guitar starting by " S " are made in 1994 -1995

I know the one serial # starts out with a Z 210, and there is a total of 8 numbers, counting the two, and not counting the Z
That is the one with just the "F" on the back neck plate. A different one I saw had a similar ser#, but the back neck plate was different.

The only problem I have with used Strats is I can't tell if someone just assembled a bunch of spare parts, or if they are original. I had hoped the back neck plate would be a clue.

I got the number wrong.
It's a Z 1 plus another 6 numbers

Z1 + 6 digit could be a 2001 or 2002,

To know if is a part-o-caster , we need many pictures to tell.

How about some photos? There are a lot of fakes out there.

Regarding the neck plate on a 2001/2001 American Series Strat - from what you describe neither one is remotely correct. It should have 3 lines and read:

Fender
Corona
California

The "Fender" is horizontal script that should be pretty similar to the vintage "spaghetti" logo as used on the headstock.

Fender stopped using neck plates with just an "F" on them in 1983 - unless it's a reissue of a guitar from a year where the "F" was used. CBS/Fender used neck plates with the modern-style "Fender" script logo at an upward angle from 1983-84 on their 2-knob Standard models, then FMIC used that same plate on American Standards (and Strat Pluses or any other model derived from the American Standards) from the start of production in late 1986 until some time during 1999.

Of course this does not include reissues; also by the time the Highway 1s came out they had plain neck plates like most MIM models.

Sorry, no pictures yet. haven't bought it yet.
Good info though.
I believe the one with just the big "F" is probably a parts guitar.
The other one though, may be legit.
it has the two point tremlo, the correct head, and the neck plate does have Fender, written like the head, with the next line being Corono, and the next California.

I'll post a picture after i talk them down a bit.

I wish that they still put serial numbers on the neck plates.

As it turns out, I was unable to make a deal.

It seems when you suggest someones guitar may not be original,
they loose interest in working with you.

No problem though. There is always another deal somewhere...
