For 45 years I had played nothing but Gibsons. Then one month ago I held my first Strat. Now I own four of them! Still love my Gibsons but I sure missed out on playing a real nice guitar for a lot of years. Anyway to my question. I have come across another Strat That I'm interested in. It is a 2005 American deluxe. It is honey blonde with the tinted soft V neck. It feels awesome and plays great. One thing that puzzles me is the fretboard. The body of the guitar is in fantastic shape and looks nearly new. The maple fretboard however has been worn thru in places down to the wood in the first five frets. Does it seem posible that that much wear could occur and the rest of the guitar not show much wear? The back of the neck doesn't show any wear either. Like I said she looks and sounds great. What do you think?

I think you might be right on the strumming. I got looking at it better and you can see a lot of fine pick marks above the pickguard that stop right at the guard. No doubt the guard was replaced, probably when new and now the original guard has found it's way back on the guitar, I will post some picks in awhile.

I had only one maple fretboard it was my first strat an old 76 I got in 80 at 16.
I always stick with rosewood because of that very thing.

Fortunatley I was raised by Joe Perry who taught me you need a Strat in one hand and a Les Paul in the other.

Here are a couple of pics to show the condition of the body compared to the fretboard. Like I mentioned before, there is no wear on the back of the neck. The guy that owns it is a friend of a friend and has let me play it all weekend. $700 is his bottom dolar. What do you think?

Look more aesthetic .

Some fret ( 1 to 3-4 fret ) could need fret dress if 3 first string buzz

I see what you are talking about on dressing those frets. Right now the guitar sounds righteous no mater where you play it. I saw the video of Clapton talking about buying Brownie. He said he liked to buy guitars that had wear showing that had been favored. I feel like that is the case with this one. One thing for sure. If I buy it the pickguard has got to go! (even though it is growing on me :) )

Of consideration is the fact that the frets in your area of concern are pretty well mashed down. They are clearly in need of a grind and polish (G&P). We're talking about 'ballpark', $100 right there. Even at this, you'll be able to get one, maybe two at the most, Gs&Ps before a partial refret would be necessary. Consider this cost too for it will be definitely be coming sooner than later. FWIW, that doesn't appear to be the original pickguard which obviously leads me to believe that the guitar was also taken apart (for better or for worse); but I digress. Unless you are capable of competently doing these fretwork tasks yourself, for $700, I'd keep looking.

As always, this is merely IMO where YMMV.

Only good luthier could tell you about fret wear and the life of fret. Photos are not close enough and they are just photo not like seeing guitar in our hand.

But if you play one week end and no buzz , fret wear are not so bad .

Right, and this is why I made the statement I did. Further, the photos are positively revealing enough for me to make that determination.

Really? So as long as a guitar's problem is asymptomatic, said problem is of little or no consequence?

Looks like some finger nail wear on the fret board, some would pay extra for that.

Fret wear should be expected on a 8yr. old guitar that has been played on a regular basis.
A fret dressing may be in order down the road, but you say it still plays well now so I would buy it and play it.

$700 sounds like a good price to me for a American Deluxe that sells for about $1600 new.

That pick guard was original for that colour in 2005.
