Just curious, how do you know?

I saw in another forum a picture of the same one that was "from" 74.
serial is 5338xx

and i used another site which gave me this:

Guitar Info
Your guitar was made at the
Fullerton Plant (Fender - CBS Era), USA
in the Year(s): 1974

Fender: Fullerton
The Fullerton factory opened in 1946, Fullerton California with the first major electric solid body guitar production began in 1950 with the Broadcaster (later known as the Telecaster). Sold in 1965 to CBS who in 1985 sold Fender to a group of private investors the plant was not included in that sale and was subsequently closed.

I think Robinstrat was going by that "tuxedo" look of the black pickguard but white covers and knobs. I've seen the dates for the start of that look anywhere from late 1974 to early 1976 just depending on the source.

That serial number should put it in the 1974-1975 range; the only way to tell for sure when it was really built would be to take it apart and check the dates/date codes on the neck, body, and some of the electronics like the pots. Fender didn't use serial numbers sequentially; they put the engraved neck plates in a parts bin and used them somewhat at random and those dating sites just sort of approximate the range of numbers used for a given year.

I must agree, not a regulation case if you decide you can't live with the smell; looks to be in good shape...but somehow smells are difficult to remove completely...you'll know if you are satisfied or not.

Yes...these years are known for a healthy mix of looks and date codes...and serial numbers. Open it up and compare dates on the pickups, neck, body, and pots...then decide what you want to really call it.

Can't tell for sure without pics! But don't remember blue interior back in the 70's. If you want to get rid of the smell, take the guitar out and spray in one of those new air fresheners (the type that can make garbage smell nice from the commercials, the name just escapes me at the moment) that really does work.

Oh and congrats and welcom to the forum :!:

I believe you are referring to Febreeze. The stuff on the commercial that makes 3 week old fish smell like an alpine meadow! Gotta say tho...stuff does work.

Very nice guitar! Congrats fella and welcome to the forum - I LOVE the seventies strats.

Febreze will indeed sort the smell out. It might also be worth wiping over the lining with unscented baby wipes - that'll get rid of any lingering dirt too. Just be sure to let it air outside and get nice and dry before you close it up again.

The Fender custom shop cleaning polish set which Donny suggested is brilliant - I was sceptical before I tried it, but it kicks the tail off the competition IMHO.

For the outside of the case, a bit of peek metal polish on the clasps and a good wipe over with car dashboard wipes - matt or gloss, your choice - and it will come up a treat.

I personally do NOT recommend using Febreeze to de-stink a case. It leaves residue that can and will attack the finish of the guitar, some types of finish react faster and worse to it. For example, I purchased a Peavey guitar from a guy who had sprayed the case interior a month before he sold it, aired it out for 3 weeks and shipped the guitar in it. It severely messed the finish up! I would use the product that Fender sells. A large well known music store near me uses it and they have not had any issues like you do with Febreeze. Some people are actually allergic to Febreeze as well... Use the Fender stuff, and let the case air out for a long time after, making sure it has not left any residue behind, and I'd even make sure to vacuum it thoroughly. What I did one time was to sprinkle in baking soda, worked it in, let it sit for a week and then throughly vacummed it out, redid that, and it was fine. The amount and type of stink can be harder to deal with at times. Just remember though that your guitar can't escape a bad case interior without you unlatching the latches, and if you care about it's finish, be VERY careful as to what and how much of what your "remedy" is.

Do Fender actually sell something for cleaning the inside of cases? Where can I get it?

I was pretty sure I was told that it was a Fender product, but I am not now seeing anything on their site, or on the store's site that told me about it, and they used to stock it. I will call them and see if they can tell me again what it is they use. But, I'd stay away from febreeze, try the baking soda thing first.
