hi, first post as im a new fender owner.
I was just given a (really really nice) guitar from a family member.
its a 74 Hardtail, natural with black pickguard.
He bought it about 40 years ago and its probably been in the closet for 36 of those years.

unfortunately the case smells very moldy.

I don't want to throw out the case if its original, but im in a dilemma.

First I want to know if its an original case and worth trying to clean up.
There's no markings at all. There are few features to describe. its all black and has blue carpet-y interior. Cant tell if if Fender or not, any way to tell?

If it is original, how do i get the mold smell out?!

Thanks in advance.

Can't tell for sure without pics! But don't remember blue interior back in the 70's. If you want to get rid of the smell, take the guitar out and spray in one of those new air fresheners (the type that can make garbage smell nice from the commercials, the name just escapes me at the moment) that really does work.

Oh and congrats and welcom to the forum :!:

I don't think that is a fender case, I could be wrong but don't think so. It still may be original to when the guitar was bought, and looks to be a good case and has held up well. Definetly worth keeping and cleaning up, a good vacuum of the insides and some of that air freshener will help. You may never get rid of the smell entirely though as sometimes that smell comes from the glues used during that time. Let it air out a bit outside and that will help as well.

The guitar (and case) is a nice looking one, very little wear and worth around $3500 or so. Enjoy playing it.

I agreee with T2Stratman - at least in the USA that's not a Fender case. Fender cases from the 70s had an orange-red interior, a larger accessory compartment that was up at the top of the case by the neck, and had the large amp-style logo on the top of the lid.

maxweenus - you don't list your location. If you're in Europe then this could have been the case that the distributor used instead of the Fender case. I have seen cases like these in a few photos from folks in other countries.

I'm in CT. Thanks for all of the input guys.
Im very excited. I realize getting a guitar like that as a gift is a rare opportunity, might inspire me to commit more time to playing.

Ill try cleaning up the case and keep it, but i went ahead and bought a new one to keep the guitar in.

The "mold" smell leaks onto the guitar...speaking of which...
Any suggestions on cleaning the guitar, or better yet, anything that is known that I shouldn't clean the guitar with? ie rubbing alcohol etc.

Thanks again for all the input.

Those packages of disilagel that say do not eat are a must.
I see you stored it with the strap, straps usually retain sweat and thats where your mold is.
Those little white or brown packages come in all electronics look like a little bean bag.

Febreeze works wonders

From the looks of the guitar...the only thing you need to clean it is a good soft polishing cloth. You can get those at a guitar shop for a couple bucks and it wouldn't hurt to buy some guitar polish, again a couple bucks. The guitar looks to be in Great shape and I wouldn't do a thing to it, except wipe it down after each time you play it. You are VERY lucky to have received it as a gift, treasure it and show it respect!

Also DonnyC is correct, straps can get a bunch of sweat on them and stink up the old case, so hang it somewhere to air it out and only leave it in the case when you ready for a gig or jam session.

Yes, we had those blue interior cases here in Germany. The Fender logo is missing.
Your guitar is a ´76.
Welcome to the forum Max.

All the best,
Robin

+2

Definitely an aftermarket case. I have a similar one for my Jazz Bass though the interior lining is black acrylic pile instead of your blue. They do seem adequate for protecting the instrument.

Just curious, how do you know?

I saw in another forum a picture of the same one that was "from" 74.
serial is 5338xx

and i used another site which gave me this:

Guitar Info
Your guitar was made at the
Fullerton Plant (Fender - CBS Era), USA
in the Year(s): 1974

Fender: Fullerton
The Fullerton factory opened in 1946, Fullerton California with the first major electric solid body guitar production began in 1950 with the Broadcaster (later known as the Telecaster). Sold in 1965 to CBS who in 1985 sold Fender to a group of private investors the plant was not included in that sale and was subsequently closed.
