G’day fellow strataholics. I just though I’d post the details of a dilemma which I am currently facing to see if anyone feels like lending a hand. Basically I’m selling my current Vox AD100VT to buy a good tube amp for my fender hot rod 62 Strat. I have narrowed my options for a new amp as follows: I can either buy a new emerald green hot rod deluxe with celestion vintage 30 speaker, or buy a used reissue Marshall JTM45 head and some sort of 2x12 cab, possibly Orange (same speakers). The latter option will require a few more bucks. Basically I’m just wondering if anyone has experience with either or both of these amps, either positive or negative.

I should mention that it’s mainly for personal use and jamming with mates (my only gig was back in high school – does that count?), and styles include Hendrix, SRV, ac/dc, pink floyd, clapton, dire straits, etc (blues and rock).

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Cheers guys.

As far as I'm concerned there's nothing better then a strat thru a Fender amp.

I had a JTM45 and didn't like it with Strats at all.

Hey guys, how do you feel about being "minor" celebrities? :?

Thing is, those two amping options would often be considered almost opposite ends of some people's musical spectrum. Your influences sited don't help: SRV means Fender all the way; Hendrix and AC/DC mean Marshall, and Clapton and Knopfler have used almost everything over the years - pick a period.

I love Marshalls and my TSL covers all the bases, near enough. The JTM45 is rather more specific in it's tone. But you may find that the Fender with a good drive pedal in front of it gives you the flexibility to do everything you want. A quality clean tone with some drive up front takes some beating.

Much as I want to nudge you towards Marshall, I suspect for you the Hot Rod Deluxe is the better option.

If you go with the Marshall after all, though, why would you not put it through the right Marshall cab? Those babes are the tops!

Just my 2 cents but the Fender Deluxe is a great amp. My only experience with Marshall was a Blues Breaker I owned years ago but to give you an idea of my opinion, I owned both amps at the same time and when it came time to sell some of my equipment the deluxe stayed with me. Marshal makes great amps but the Fender just has that vibe and sound

I'm also a fan of the Fender tube amps, had a Deluxe, but it was too much for home use so I downsized to a Blues Junior which I use with an overdrive pedal, couldn't be happier.

If I were to ever use a Marshall amp it would be a 50W Plexi.

two months it celebrated its 30th birthday. Yes, I bought it 30 years ago.
It's a 100 watt Master Volume beast.
