HELP!
I'm thinking of buying a cheap Stratocaster and wiring it to use 3 dual rail coil-tappable humbuckers. I don't really want to have to change the guitar too much or spend too much money, Personally I would like to keep the traditional 5 positions switch and use push/pull coil-tapping pots to replace the traditional tone and volume pots to coil-tap each of the 3 humbuckers individual while still keep the original strat selection (eg. Bridge, Bridge + Middle, Middle, Middle + Neck, Neck)

Anyone got any ideas on how this would be possible as I know very little about the wiring of any guitars let alone something as complicated as coil-tapping

This is exactly what you are asking for. Have fun and good luck.

HHH Strat with Single Coil Options and All 3 Pickups in Position 3

Here's another wiring setup using Seymour Duncan Hot Rails pickups (although any SD single coil sized humbuckers should wire the same). This one uses 3 push-pull (or push-push) pots so that each of the humbuckers can be split to a single coil. I've chosen to wire it so that the Middle pickup splits to its south coil and the Neck & Bridge pickups split to their north coils so that Positions 2 & 4 will still be hum cancelling. Position 3 is all 3 pickups in parallel with no tone control.

5-Way Switching:

1. Bridge – Tone 2

2. Bridge & Middle – Tone 1

3. All 3 Pickups – No Tone

4. Neck & Middle – Tone 1

5. Neck – Tone 1

Push-Pull Pots Down for Humbuckers

Volume Push-Pull Up for Neck North Coil

Tone 1 Push-Pull Up for Middle South Coil

Tone 2 Push-Pull Up for Bridge North Coil

This is Amazing, Thank You So, So Much, I was just wondering though, Is a 5-way Super Switch easy to use/install in a Stratocaster, as it looks different from diagrams of the standard switch I've seen and I don't know much about it

Never insatlled one. I am quite happy with the stock 5-way switch selections.

Of course it looks different. You are asking for a pretty complex mod. Won't work without it.

It fits exactly the same, if that's what you mean. There's more soldering to do, of course. But if your soldering skills are OK then it's just a matter of copying the diagram Bill posted. If you're not comfortable with soldering take it to a good tech. Easy stuff for someone who's at home under a guitar pickguard.

Oh, and just to be super pedantic, as Seymour Duncan indicates, what you are talking about is coil splitting, not coil tapping. Pedantic - but there is a meaningful difference.

Cheers - C

Okay thanks, again!
Just one more question, are all the Seymour Duncan dual rail humbucker pickups able to coil-split because I was thinking using an SHR, SCR and SVR as they suggest it and wanted to check that they were all able to coil-split

I suggest you check the SD website for that information.

I've checked the website and for all of them it has a 4 wire conductor hookup which to mean implies that they are all able to coil-split but why does it say 4 wires when the diagrams show 5?

Two wires for each coil and an overall screen. Connect the screen to a ground point like the back of the volume pot.

Yup. Dark gray wire in the picture as shown in my original post.

One last thing, If I horizontally flip the diagram above will it represent a left handed circuit from beneath or does that not work?

The picture is looking at everything from the back of the pickguard as you would see it sitting on your work bench.

Left handed pots are different from right handed pots.

I don't understand how left handed pots are different. The pots on my strats turn the sameway as my friends right-handed strat, it just means when I put a volume knob on 1 is full and 10 is off

From what I've read it sounds as if as long as I solder them as you would right handed ones and then the volume knobs will go the other way but it will work

Basically I'm left handed and trying to work out how I'd need to solder things while still using all the same parts you used

is it not possible to use the same parts and solder them (pretty much) the same and just put them in a left handed scratch plate? If you convert the diagram that is?

A left handed pot has a reverse audio taper so that 1 is off and 10 is max. If you wire a regular pot opposite what it should be the taper will be all wrong. I have never seen a left handed push/pull pot like is used in the drawing. You're on your own here.
