Hi all, new here. I bought a used guitar from guitar center about two months ago. It was advertised as a 1962 reissue fender stratocaster 40th anniversary.

It's an ice blue guitar with a matching headstock. But today I began to question if it's actually a fender guitar.

On the headstock, it has two fender decals/stickers. One just says "fender stratocaster - synchronized tremolo (below)" and the other says "original custom body". There is no true etched fender logo on the headstock.

The back of the headstock is blank. I was told that it should have the serial number on it. The serial number is on the neckplate which is also blank (other than the serial number), but I believe that's how the 62 reissue plates are. Now the serial number does match the one on the certificate that came with the guitar and case. But now I'm questioning if it's a fender neckplate on a different guitar.

I would hope that it's a fender guitar... it sounds legit, nothing extremely spectacular, but pretty much legit. Any help is VERY much appreciated, thanks!

Those two logo's are correct. The serial number is in the right place. It sure looks like the right guitar to me. Have you checked the serial number to see when it was made?

well i'm sure that the serial number is legit. but i'm wondering why they put stickers on the headstock instead of an etched logo.

the serial number matches the one on the certificate but i'm thinking they could of just took the neckplate off of the original 62 (which could of been any guitar, any color, any headstock) and put it on my guitar. because there no evident serial number on any of the actual pieces of wood. i haven't checked the pocket of the body where the neck fits into though..

but uh, why would they put stickers on the headstock?

Fender uses stickers. They don't engrave their logo. With the exception of the Fender American Deluxe strat which has an inlaid logo, every strat I've ever seen had stickers for the logo.

really? i've never seen a strat with stickers on the headstock. i have a MIM strat and the logo is etched on, as well as the serial number on the back. thanks for the help so far, any info is appreciated.

The decal logo is appropriate for a reissue model.
And the decal can be on top of the finish, not underneath the clear coat like your MIM.

Of course, it could be a fake. You'd have to check the other parts: what numbers are on the neck, in the neck pocket, body routes, etc. Take a lot of pictures and give us a link.

I'd be more inclined to believe that your MIM is fake... NO strat that I am aware of has an "etched" logo. As stated, the Deluxe models have a silver foil inlay logo but NONE are etched. On the other hand, with that one exception, EVERY Fender has decals.

here's a few pics of my headstock. sorry for bad quality. if you look closely, you can see the outline of the decal.

but then i found this picture of a '58 reissue:

so maybe all of the reissues are like this? i hope so, but still i think the decal is lame.

Looks fine to me.

....and that's a decal on your MIM, it's not etched.

i guess i mixed up the word "etched". that is the word one of the techies at the local music shop used. i was basically referring to a fender logo that isn't a decal, you can rub your finger over it and you won't feel any difference from the wood.

thanks for the reply, i'm gonna go with legit now

dont worry if you just do some research youll find that the guitar is up to the 62 specs, back then they didnt put where it was made becasue they were all made in usa, also the logo was a sticker back in 62 the one thing that has me concerned is the matching headstock ive never a 62 reissues strat with that unless the previous owner had that put on themselvers

the matching headstock is fine. that last picture i posted is of a 58 reissue. i'm pretty sure it's because it's a 40 year anniversary since 1962. (2002 guitar)

last night i was just really bummed because some guitar tech at the music store was like "Yeah dude, no way that's a strat. you got ripped off. i feel bad for you, it should have the serial number on the back. and what's with the stickers? fender never does that. you better try and get your money back"

i was like wow..

thanks for the help guys, this forum is really helpful.

Maybe you should go back in educate the tech. In his job he should know simple things like that.
