Hi, I was hoping someone could help me. I was given a fender stratocaster a few years ago and it has been sitting under my bed ever since. I know nothing at all about guitars. I looked up the serial number using theguitardatingproject and it said its a 74. It looks like its in pretty good condition and it has the hard case and manual. Other than that I know nothing. Im planning on selling it but would like to know going in what to ask for it or what is a reasonable offer. http://s2.photobucket.com/user/thrif...20strat?page=1

any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

You might want to repost the link to your photos - all I get when I click the link is a "Photobucket Error" page.

As far as selling one of these - there is always ebay; I wouldn't necessarily use craigslist as you'll get lowball offers. Otherwise you could consign it through a reputable dealer.

A 1974 Strat isn't worth huge money like a pre-CBS or even the early CBS models (up to the change to the 3-bolt neck in 1971); I think they did peak out at the $3-4K range prior to the economic downturn in 2008 but I'm not sure what they really go for these days. You'll see them at gBase dealers for anywhere from $2,500 to over $4K but that's their "asking" price; who knows what they really sell for. 1974 was a transition year from staggered-polepiece pickups to flat polepiece pickups; the ones with the staggered polepiece pickups seem to go for a bit more than those with the later flat polepiece pickups. Price will also vary by color (custom colors will go for more than basic black or natural) and condition.

thanks, this link should work. http://s2.photobucket.com/user/thriftst ... rat?page=1

Im probably going to go to a dealer, mostly beacuse I just have no idea what its worth to even begin with to list it on ebay. I looked at prices on ebay of ones that sold, but they are all over the place. I think its in pretty good condition considering its almost 40 years old and Im not sure what a polepiece pickup is. Thanks for the reply.

Yours has staggered (different heights on the magnets in the pickups)
It looks really well preserved for a 40 year old
Best of luck with a good price

IMO the value is $3K to $3.5K easy . Maybe more if you have original case and paper.

I see a 72 at Cowtown guitars In Las Vegas few days before . He ask $4200 if I remember.

Take your time it is a very nice and good guitar.

That one is in very nice shape, and as Ted J and stratele52 say with the staggered polepiece pickups it does fall into that "more desireable" group of early 3-bolt Strats that have retained their value pretty well compared to the peak pricing back in 2007-2008 (and compared to later years).

I don't think there are any major vintage dealers near where you're located but it would be worth running it by Gruhn's in Nashville or Chicago Music Exchange or some other known vintage dealer to get a really solid appraisal - I know Gruhn will do a photo appraisal, but I don't know what they would need for that.

It's in great condition for a '74, keep in mind a dealer is probably only going to give you 60-70% of it's actual value. They'll need to make a fair profit on it to justify hanging it on their wall.
