I'm looking at possibly buying a 1998 American Standard. Are there any issues with late 90s Strats I should know about?

Anyone know what pickups they were using at the time?

Your collective wisdom is much appreciated.

:D

As far as I'm aware American Standards have always used American Standard pickups. Up until recently a few models have shipped with CS Fat 50's.

That being said The American Standard pickup has varied a fair bit over the years. My advise is to play a buttload of them and see what you like.

If you're willing to do the work yourself, a pickup swap out shouldn't cost you much more than $200. Depending on the pickups you want and where you get them from.

The late '90s Am. Stds are great guitars. The pups sound pretty good. I agree that you don't like them, you can always slap them out.

Personally I prefer the Am. Series Strats (in production after 1999)over the Am. Std. The necks are bit more comfortable, the body contours and pickup caveties are more accruate, and the pup pole pieces are stagard.

If you are ever interested, check out the Strat Plus. It's a great Fender Strat from the '80s and '90s.

I hope this helps.

I'm been reading some pretty powerful endorsements of Bill Lawrence Keystone pickups from people like Ron Kirn. And they cost a pittance. Like $70 for a set! Thinking about putting a a couple in my Road Worn Tele. And earlier I almost ordered a Strat set for a guitar I don't even own yet!
