Hi all,
I'm hoping you guys can answer a question I have. I bought a 93 MIA strat a few years back in what I have identified as Jade Pearl.

However after it's taken a few dings, I chipped back some of the paint to what looks like a coat of Lake Placid Blue (or something very similar) underneath. I know that Fender would quite often throw another layer of paint over a blemished finish (usually sunburst) in the 60's and 70's. However I'm wondering if this practice continued into the 90's or whether it's more likely that a previous owner has had it resprayed?

I'm not all that keen on the color. So If it's not factory paint, I've been thinking about stripping it back and repainting it surf or sea foam green.

Do you have a photo of your actual guitar?

Hello Battery Chicken: a look inside the pickup and control cavities and the neck pocket will often show whether a guitar has had a user respray or not. Guys who do their own refinishing are often not careful in those areas and you can tell a factory respray from an amateur one reasonably easily. Photos of those cavities might help us help you...?

Mind you, I have a feeling Jade Pearl is not the sort of colour players often want to respray their guitars. They usually go for exciting finishes like red, or traditional custom colours (as you are contemplating). If Jade Pearl is what you've got I sort of suspect it indicates a factory respray rather than an aftermarket one. That would be my sight-unseen hunch, anyhow.

Cheers - C

Sorry I've shielded the cavity, so I can't give you any images of it without ripping it out. It is thoroughly painted all the way through, but certainly not as well buffed as the exterior.

I have an image after I swapped out the pickups and scratchplate (I'm still trying to convince myself that the mint green scratchplate on green makes it look unique)

You can see the mark under the jack where the blue is underneath.

Battery Chicken - a couple of observations:

1. That photo of a recent American Standard in jade pearl looks more "silver" than most I've seen; the one I saw in person looked more "green" like this one at Wildwood Guitars (no affiliation):

2. I think your's might be either pewter or inca silver - both of them could well have a "blueish" undercoat and the top coat could be somewhat yellowed since it's a 1993.

3. Fender never had a color quite like that until the jade pearl came out last year. If your's has been refinished it could be the "sage green" (which was a bit lighter green than the jade pearl) that was used on MIMs during the 2000s.

Pewter is a colour which was associated with Eric Clapton for many years.

Not to confuse with EC Grey which is a darker variant of that finish.

^I can never get used to seeing Doyle Bramhall III playing with his strings upside down. It's just not natural dammit!

Thanks for lending me your eyes folks, I really do appreciate it.

Unfortunately the pic I posted doesn't bring out the green in it quite as much. The thing with silver/pewter is the greys are really strong, I'm reasonably certain it's not either of those. Though pewter can look the same if shot in a yellow light. There are definite green/yellows mixed in, but not so much that I'd call it sage green. This is really making me think more and more that it's a non-factory refinish using a non-factory colour.
