guys,

just bought a new american standard strat-sunburst. i just noticed (i know :-P) that it's seam is offcenter, not in the middle like usual. i am worried it's not normal, or less sought after and maybe i should take it back and get one with a center seam, while i still can.

thoughts?

Other than the seam do you like the guitar?

If so, don't worry about it and just play it.

Some internet know-it-alls think having the seam going into the neck pocket isn't the best idea. I guess they'd rather have the seam anywhere else.

But have you ever seen a strat body coming apart at the seam?

Me neither.

hmm... i was lookin' at pics of sunburst strats and noticed that some had seams in the exact same spot as mine... i guess it's kosher? i haven't found any "famous artists" guitar pics (uch as john mayer's strat for example) that would satisfy my freaking out-ness yet though. cuz you know, if the big dude's think it's cool, it MUST BE! :-P

aesthetic things like that just bother me, but i guess that's how a lot of themare made.

i think i did read somewhere that an offset seam creates better sustain- don't know how true that is, but it lifted me up for a sec. haha.

i guess i could live with it though, now that i know there are other guitars that look just like mine and sell for much more you know?

why then does it seem to matter so much on other brand guitars?

You mentioned that your Strat had a seam, meaning one seam. Some Strats come with bodies made of multiple pieces. It is up to the builder to match the wood grain as closely as possible to make it pleasing to the eye, and less apparent. I guess some woods are easier to match up.
What type of wood is your Strat made from(Alder, ash, basswood, balsa, pine???)

actually the grain is very well matched, and the seam is hardly noticeable. it's just that the seam is offcenter. i had always seen guitars with the seam down the center, until i got mine and i freaked...

it's made of alder :-)

Off-center seams are nothing new and may actually work better than a centered seam. Most modern solid electrics have muilt-piece bodies. Given that modern adhesives are generally stronger that the timbers they join and that a single-piece body may warp (same grain the way through therefore tensions all in one plane), a multi-piece body is better. An off-centre seam means the the centered tensions of the strings (the bridge being set at the center line) and your playing/handling, will spread the tensions throughout the body, rather than focus it about one line.
