I bought an upgraded highway 1 last month and just bought some new pickups. While in there I really want to convert it back to standard strat wiring, possibly add the middle tone control. How hard is this? I can't find much, I've talked to a few people and from what I understand I have to remove all the caps and resistors, and then just follow a wiring diagram from there. Do I need to put any of the caps back on? Also since the tone is currently controlling the neck and bridge, if I connect a wire from the bridge to middle leg on the 5 way will that be included? If you have any info, it'd be much appreciated! thanks

Welcome and congrats on your Strat!

Your question about rewiring is relative. To some, it is simple, to others, baffling. How experienced are you with soldering?

Based on your statement about having "to remove all the caps and resistors, and then just follow a wiring diagram from there", coupled by your question about replacing caps leads me to believe that you're not very familiar with (at least) a Strat's wiring.

For your objective, yes, one cap must be installed and yes, a jumper wire on the selector switch would have to be added. Here's the exact diagram you need to get the job done:

Good luck!

Thanks for the response! Yes I'm not very experienced with the strat wiring but think I have enough soldering experience to get the job done. David Allen included a .047 cap with the pups so that would replace the one in the diagram. I'll give it a go this weekend.

Any time and remember, "slow and steady wins the race"! Let us know how you make out.

Why do you want to remove the Greasebucket? I added it to both my Strat and Tele and love it. Keeps things from getting muddy, especially with the neck pickup. Never understood why people dislike it so. :?

I just wanted to have the standard wiring. I didn't HATE the new setup, putting in new pickups so I wanted to go back to stnd while in there. One question...Im looking at the wiring diagrams and there is a link between the two tone pots from one leg to another but my HW1 didnt have that...Do i need to add it?

Uh, yeah if you want the tone controls to work properly. You need to follow the diagram that Martian provided for things to work as you requested.
