Hi, I have just found a 94 Made in Japan Strat for £280. It's a very clean guitar with minor fret wear and just the slightest of scratches. The SN begins with T and when I checked it, it shows as a 1994 MIJ . My question is what does the T stand for? Is it Tribute like the MIA's? Here's a pic from the site.

Thanks

The T means little. They used a letter prefix in their numbering scheme for their serial numbers. They even used some of them over again!

Our very own Xheferi has a web site with lots of info on the MIJ guitars, here is the link:

I have yet to find a MIJ Standard Strat I didn't get along with. Fender has a 54 reissue Strat that I would love to get my hooks into. It wasn't until playing it for a while and enjoying it that I discovered it was MIJ/CIJ. I laughed and said "I'm not surprised one bit!". Someday I'll get one!

BrittB...You got that right. I worked for a Fender dealer when thier whole MIJ thing started and the quality was great right from the start. If you threw in some MIA pickups, pots, and switches, they were pretty much on par with the US made guitars. And it was funny too, as some folks would play em and then see MIJ and right up until they saw that MIJ, they were digging them, then it was like uhm, it is ok....funny as hell to watch! I have had a couple MIJ guitars and to be honest if you can get ahold of any of thier for domestic use in Japan made guitars, they ARE on par with US guitars. I have a 62 reissue from thier domestic production (got it from a military buddy) and it has CTS pots, US switches, and the pickups are nearly identical (except for the wiring to the pots) with US stuff, the only real exception is finish, they don't use laquer on anything I have seen

So it looks as though it's a MIJ s5tandard then. For that price though I think it is a bargain. As for MIJ Fenders in gerneral I agree thery are great. I have a 52 Reissue Tele from 1994 and a Non export Hardtail strat E series from 84 (unplayed, still has film on pickguard). They are both very good sounding and playing guitars. Wpuld never sell either of them. I just wanted to get another MIJ for live gigs so that I could keep the others in top condition.
Will let you know if I get it.
Here's the 84 strat

That hardtail is a keeper for sure Mr Pink! I just recently got rid of my MIA HSS Strat because it just didn't play as well as my 85 E series Squier and I had to made a choice in order to get another guitar. Funny how some stuff works out!

You're right there Britt B. I recently played a Highway one and.....well, in comparison the E series was in a different class. I'm not knocking MIA or anything but if you can get a good MIJ it will rival ANY MIA, FACT!!! I would just like to know how the new MIJ guitars compare. Any idea?

I'm not knocking MIA Strats at all, I had that one because it spoke to me and was an awesome guitar. It's just that when the time came, that's how it played out and I've had no regrets. The only new one I have played is the 54 reissue. It was in the same class as far as I could tell. The thing I really like about it was that the neck reminded me of a Telecaster a little bit. I really like Tele necks so.....

If it says MADE IN JAPAN the "T" is the way you know what year (approx) that it was made and that is the only meaning of it :D

S + 6 digits 1994-1995
T + 6 digits 1994-1995
U + 6 digits 1995-1996

My CIJ is S046357. I wasn't sure what year it was until now.

Mines newer than I thought, makes no difference as I still like it. Playing it right now with a big ole dumb grin on my face!
