Around 2005, I had the fortunate opportunity to meet Buddy Guy and Robert Cray at the Ryman Auditorium.

Buddy walked out on stage, guitar in hand, but he didn't play a note. He just started singing as his band played behind him. The legend looked old and tire, but then, with a flurry of notes, the "old-man" clothes came off and out from underneath was a man in his youth, with fire and passion. No guitar play, still alive, plays the blues with such tension and emotion.

After the show I waited out back with a group of fans and Robert Cray, who looked very relaxed and casual. After a little bit Mr. Cray shook hands with everybody, thanked them for coming, and said that it was late and he was headed to his room. He lit up his cigar and walked away. (Thankfully, I was able to get him to sign my Strat before the show, but that is another story)

So there we were, waiting for Buddy Guy to make his exit. The door opened and Buddy walked on out with his manager and some other people I didn’t know. A picture was taken and he signed a CD or something. I was about to hand my Strat over to Buddy to get it signed, when he was suddenly ushered away by his manager, who said, "Alright, Buddy, we got to go."

That was it; no guitar signed. I was shocked, but thinking quickly, I called to Buddy and he turned around. Here was my chance to thank him for inspiring me and to get my guitar signed (something I had wanted for away). My mind suddenly went blank and I didn't know what to say. Instead of asking Buddy Guy to sign my guitar, I said, "Thanks for a great show."

In a flash I realized that this 70+ yr old man just gave me 2 1/2 hrs of his time, it was late and time to go home. In that moment I felt selfish and greedy asking him to sign my guitar. Looking at Buddy Guy, I was just thankful that I got the opportunity to shake his hand and thank him for playing some great music.

The blond finish, in retrospect, I expect was a nod to the '89 Custom Shop guitar which he's currently using on stage.

The guitar you're talking about came initially with Lace Sensor pickups and Elite electronics. It was also featured with a tort guard. Therefore the discontinued honey blond USA BG was a "snapshot" of Buddy's CS guitar in its original form.

I think Buddy modified his guitar to better suit his playing style.

I remember when this guitar came into use. There was a Guitar Player cover issue on him and it. It has the Clapton electronics and Lace Sensors which I believe were attractive to him for that reason. [ You recall that I've always maintained that there was predecessor to it with a 12db midboost and conventional pickups which was short-lived and ultimately became the first Powerhous Strat]

There after came the Polka Dot Strats. It wasn't until 2010 that the '89 blond Strat appeared. [They took it apart at the Crossroads Concert that year.] I started asking questions about it on the CS Forum around that time. I didn't learn that it was an '89 CS guitar that had been built for him back then, until recently.

Surely the guitar in question is the blonde '89 in its original form!

The tort guard has been replaced with a 3-ply white parchment and Lace Sensors were swapped for a set of Vintage Noiseless pickups.

Unlike Eric Buddy got rid of the whole Elite circuit.

I suppose these cosmetic changes occurred in 2010.

I don't know that I would make that assumption outright. However, somewhere in my memory Paul Waller might have said that the '89 had been routed for the midboost circuit board that even the new one would be, even though the circuit was passive. Some of the actual truth of this stuff just never filters down to the masses. [Note that the date on pg 4 of the service diagram accessed via the link on the previous post is June 2000.]

which included the humbucker-equipped guitar, I suppose :P

Buddy is also a notable Telecaster aficionado.

Found this photo showing the famed Chicago bluesman cradling a blue & white polka dot Thinline Telecaster with a large headstock Strat neck and a pair of Wide Range humbuckers.

Suggests why the wait time in the Custom Shop is what it is.
