Did the Buddy Guy Strats ever come in a 3-tone sunburst? I have seen some for sale ads offering 3-tone as opposed to the 2-tone. .. but I'm thinking these may be typos. Can anyone help?

May have, if they were MIM. Also possible the person installed a BG neck on a MIM strat. Best way to know, send the serial number to Fender Customer Service.

First...welcome to the Forums.

To the best of my knowlege and belief, there was no SB3 finish. There was very short run, in the early '90's, of a blond guitar with a tortoise shell pickguard and white plastic parts which contained a 12db midboost circuit. Thereafter and until it's discontinuance a couple of years ago, the MIA guitar Artist Series was offered in blond as described above, and in SB2, with the Clapton electronics. The MIM Artist polkadot guitar remains as described in the products section. There have been seen, a white on red, and a black on white polka dot guitar as well. [I remember one of our members posting a picture of a white on red which he owned, but the black on white was not available to the general public as far as I know.] Guy is currently playing his old '89 blond Custom Shop Strat. Chromeface, our official photojournalist, once posted a picture of him playing a white on black polkadot Strat with two humbuckers. There's an excellent article on him in the current Vintage Guitar magazine which discusses his life and his gear. Paul Waller, the masterbuilder who is doing his guitars, previewed the new Custom Shop guitar which is in the works. Three years ago, I was priviledged to learn that this was in the works, from Paul himself. One of our members witnessed the Fender staff disassembling and photographing Guy's blond Strat at the 2010 Crossroads concert. Shortly after that, I was had dinner with Mike Eldred and Paul Waller in Manhattan, after a Fender Road Show on Long Island. We discussed, in part, his work for Buddy. The new guitar will be modeled after his '89, finished in a white polka dot on irridescent blue paint with passive VN pickups. There's a picture of it in the magazine.

This model became the basis for the MIM Deluxe Powerhouse Strat, introduced in 1998.

There were two resistors which reduced the boost to 12dB.

If you clip them then you'll be able to unlock the full 25dB boost.

It's a black Strat with white polka dots, not a "Dalmation"!

The Dalmation has the classic 3-single coil setup.

You know...that's always been my speculation because I remember that guitar well and have never been able to find a copy of the Fender catalog which showed it back then. You may recall my posts wherein I said I had always been trying to find a dealer who had one in stock to no avail.

Sorry...That's a type on my account. Dalmation was my name for the guitar. Thanks for remembering. Always wanted one like that...also without success.

Is that guitar you're talking about?

Buddy had a red polka dot -not dissimilar to the aforementioned guitar- sporting Gold Lace Sensors and the proprietary "Elite" circuit.

During the '90s there was a 2-color-sunburst and a blonde that was basically a Clapton Strat. I almost bought one, but settled on the green EC Strat.

To the best of my knowledge there has never been a 3CSB.

I played a Blonde Buddy Guy USA Strat with Lace sensor pick-ups in a Guitar Center once. I also tried to buy a USA Buddy Guy two tone burst off of craigs list. The guy on Craigs List kept changing his mind about selling. Both guitars were USA Buddy Guy Strats with Lace Sensor Gold pickups.

Sure looks like the one which was pictured in Vintage Guitar. The article left me with the impression that it had not been released yet or would ever. This, perhaps a prototype. All to often, with Fender, one never knows. Thanks for the pic.

I'm sure you know that this Artist Series guitar has been D/C'd. The only one remaining is the MIM Polka Dot. Unlike its predecessor, the new signature guitar runs a passive circuit using Vintage Noiseless pickups and has yet to be added to the products section. It may be restricted to the Custom Shop if and when.

The question was...Has the Buddy Guy Stratocaster ever been made in 3 tone sunburst? I've seen one blonde buddy Guy Strat with Lace pick-ups and two Buddy Guy Strats with two tone burst and Lace pick-ups, all made in USA. I'm no expert on Buddy Guy Stratocasters.

The answer is NO.

This guitar was only available in 2-colour sunburst and honey blonde.

You must have missed the part where I said, "To the best of my knowledge there has never been a 3CSB."

Buddy's first Stratocaster was a two-tone burst. The disoontinued Artist Series guitar gave the nod to this as one of its options. The blond finish, in retrospect, I expect was a nod to the '89 Custom Shop guitar which his is currently using on stage.
