My mistake. When I first read the ad, I thought this was one of those automatic tuning gizmos as opposed to just a built in tuning indicator. My apologies.

However, given the plethora of stompbox and headstock tuners available, I see no reason to mod a guitar just to install a tuner.

There is another one that replaces a humbucker mounting ring which I think is rather cool... I'd like a device like either of these as well as I've accidentally left my headstock tuner home on more than one occasion. Thankfully, my old trusty Boss TU-12EX is always in my gig bag.

For those as don't feel like following the link, this is the gizmo in question:

Hey HNSFury: I admit I haven't tried it so can't speak for it's accuracy and convenience. However, I see several reasons more people aren't using them. The most basic is the look - a lot of people just don't like changing the traditional visual arrangement of guitars. Strokes for folks on that one.

Next, many of us don't like hassling around with 9 volt batteries in our guitars. Where to stow them, how tiresome it is to access them for battery changes - all that stuff.

For those who already have batteries in their guitars there is the fundamental problem that the N-Tune won't work with active pickups or passive pickups with other active electronic circuitry, like a mid-boost.

On Strats there is an issue with the ring of the N-Tune conflicting with the height screw on the bridge pickup. There are solutions, but it's an extra little niggle.

And then the fundamental stumbling block, the price. The N-Tune has come down a lot since it first appeared a few years ago, but still, presuming you have more than one guitar (anyone here...? :) ) you need an extra unit for each instrument. Nice for N-Tune's profits - but most of us have noticed that a single pedal tuner works for all our guitars and also avoids all the other issues mentioned above.

I guess all of that is why we don't see them used more often.

Cheers - C
