You're not wrong - you can get a complete standard strat plastics kit (less PG) for less than the price of three of either of those. They do look good though. I really like the look of the ali bullets too. Will they work with the chrome domes do you think? They look quite matt finish on the allparts website - that might actually dial the cheese factor back a bit though. Another option might be the fender amp style knobs:

I used these on a mahogany body/black PG/black pup strat I threw together for my wife's cousin, and they looked pretty fly.

Your tastes must be pretty close to mine. The above "witch Hat" knobs (aka Fender Amp) where choice #3 for me. I ruled them out yesterday and am going to order the other two previously mentioned. On another note, I do prefer press-on knobs that fit the spine rather than using the brass sleeve with a set screw. Seems the later always wobble when you turn them and can come loose after some time.

Can't be too far away - I'd say a large part of that though is me having seen some of your builds before I put any of my own together - I'm probably copying your tastes more than anything! They just look right to me - somewhere between vintage and modern. I was also raised on a steady diet of Clapton, so a classic strat with lace sensors appeals.

I know what you mean about the set screw-type knobs too. They're not so bad on pots with solid shafts, but if you fit solid shafts it limits your options. I find that there's a little slack between the split shafts and the inside surface of the set screw type knobs, plus the set screw can deform the spline too, making even more space. Getting them level can be a pig! A couple of folds of copper shielding tape slotted into the spline on the shaft and then a single wrap around it before putting the knob on can help. But, that's probably way too half-assed for one of your builds... 8)

I recently put some knobs with set screws on split shaft pots. I made a small metal block to slip snuggly into the split shaft. That stopped the shaft from compressing when the screw was tightened, and the knobs stayed straight. As Martian says: YRMV.

Umm :? Any picts? How did you make them? I have always used that copper/brass sleeve and then tried to put the set screw on the side of the split so i do not compress one side of the shaft. Worked pretty good but still not perfect—I tend toward perfect! 8)

I don't have any pics. These were Stew Mac Ebony knobs that I put on a Carvin that had new pots installed. The knobs don't have a sleeve. I just cut some scrap metal, and ground and filed the small blocks to shape. I didn't want the screw to go into the split because I don't have any number markings, so I have the screw set at 7.5 while facing the pups. That way I can do a quick turn to either 10 or 5, which is the usuable range for me. Anyway, you do beautiful work Xhefri. I know all about perfectionists. My dad would finish a project and take it apart 3 or 4 times till it was exactly the way he wanted it. Used to drive me crazy. :)

that configuration would loose the quacky voices so typical of a Strat (aka: out-of-phase single coil tones).

Yes, the loss of that traditional Strat quack still remains a disadvantage with HHH pickups. But there are many solutions to fix this problem.

I found that having the Dually in the neck was not all that useful as it did not really produce that many different voices as did a Dually so close to the bridge.

Lace has a specific version of the Dually for the neck and bridge positions.

For example the Red/Red for neck is voiced to produce jazzy, dark tones similar to that of an overwound P90-style soapbar while the Red/Red for bridge is an extremely hot humbucker catering for a more heavy metal kind of distortion with lots of Roadhouse grit into the mix.

I have tried several color combos and just could not see much difference in the neck except if you use a really hot pickup contrasted by a more vintage pickup. One day I might build another this way!

Looking good!

Also, I haven't forgot about what we discussed, but certain current events
have juggled priorities a bit.

Mike and ZZ, you guys are too funny!  OK..... I finally got around to working on the neck. Was so busy and too lazy to take a lot of pictures. I was working this in between a bunch of other responsibilities I had going on so far this week. Picts not shown are of the edges of the Ultra Neck. For some reason the finish Fender uses on the back of these necks does not adhere well to the edge of the Ebony on the fretboard. A common problem is a weird peeling that will start to happen. This neck had that happening in several areas. I took a sharp razor knife and simply scraped off the finish from the edges of the neck. The finish adheres well to the Maple, so it stayed put there. After removing all the finish from the edge of the Ebony, I sanded the edges with a little 320# and then the whole back of the neck, lightly, with 600# to make is silky smooth. The end results is a very clean neck. After that was done I popped it on the body and oiled the Ebony. The fit is perfect—nice and snug, not too tight in the neck socket.

I have a new set of Chrome Fender Schaller locking tuners that I will use. The mounting nut is a 10mm so I have a 10mm socket on a hand driver I use to tighten them down. The next step will be to put the black ground wires on the pickguard and get it wired up to the body. Stay tuned! 8)

Mike, the pickup you were interested in is sitting on the bench behind the body! It is a middle position American Standard RW pickup. No rush on our deal, but I am still interested. (For those who do not know what is going, on Mike is trading a 1980 Gold Top Les Paul straight across for this pickup. I think he should give me some money to boot, but I will not push it.)

These are not Schallers but Korean locking tuners made by Ping for Fender.

Schallers didn't have the "F" logo embossed in their tops.

Additionally, Schallers are made from brushed chrome as opposed to the Pings, which are polished.

Well, I just learned something. I buy some of my guitar items for Allparts and they say on their website (when I placed my order):

"Fender Locking Tuners, Chrome. Lock your strings down at the tuners for maximum tuning stability. Set of 6, Chrome Finish, Fender / Schaller Locking Tuning Machines (Used on the American Deluxe Series guitars). Chrome finish (By Schaller)."

http://www.allparts.com/099-0818-100-Fender-Locking-Tuners_p_99.html

So I just contacted them and they are going to change to the item description they have on their website. BUT saying that, these tuners are not Korean, but "Made in Taiwan", as that is what is on the back of the Fender packaging. Also Schallers do make Chrome tuners, or at least use too as that was what originally came on all the Ultra guitars. Anyhow Chromeface, thanks for pointing that out.

I wish that the vintage tuners were still standard issue.
