My 1997 ultra has a different bridge. Is this your favorite bridge?

Many of the Ultra's came with this DX Floyd II bridge (see below) while others just had a chrome version of the standard 2-point American bridge. I like both actually. I was going to put the Floyd on this build but the Allen screws on the lower back hit the route on the top of the body and I did not want to chance messing up the finish routing it. Besides I think the chrome will look nice 8) .

I've been pretty busy this week so not a lot has been done on this guitar. I just finished drilling the holes for the jack plate and the pickguard. The next thing I'll be doing is working on the neck and also putting the Micro-tilt adjuster in for the neck on the body.

I'll also let you take a small peek at my messy workshop! I have more projects that I can begin to finish. And when you mount the jack plate you have to be really careful. The common mistake people make is they mark their holes for the jack plate when the Jack is not installed in the plate. Then they go to mount the jack plate assembly together onto the body and find out the back of the Jack hits the body and the holes don't lineup. So it's best to have the whole jack assembly together with the wires on it when you mark the holes. One thing you don't want to have is a bunch of holes that don't line up drilled all over!

Image

When I drill new holes for a pick guard the first thing I do is make sure I have the bridge in place so I can make sure everything lines up perfectly. I drill holes for one place put a screw in it and I drill holes for another place on the other side of the neck and put a screw in it. I do the same by the two screws by the bridge. Then I put screws in each one of those holes to hold the pickguard in place.

@xhefri

The "Mini" Floyd Rose tremolo was also available in black and gold.

Only the chrome version of the bridge was officially sold.

Black would look great, IMO.

Jeff, it looks rubbish.

There's a bit of fluff on the middle tone post, the strings are missing, there's no neck and there's little bits of wood hanging out of the pickguard.

I really like how it is coming together - I think the chrome domes look good. Agree with you that the tele knobs are a little over the top though. They look super-tall for some reason too! Black strat knobs all the way. Or maybe some of these?

Would be better if the barrel was black...

Too funny! :D I have had this page open for almost 5 days trying to decide on getting those exact knobs or maybe these:

http://www.allparts.com/MK-3306-011-Aluminum-Bullet-Knobs_p_2331.html

I think I will buy both and see which looks the nicest. They don't give away those knobs if you noticed. Even with my discount I have quite a bit of money just in the knobs! :?

Yes a solid black one would be cool. I have only seen them in the HM versions of the Floyds.

Yes, but extremely rare to find.

This afternoon I was able to squeeze in getting the micro-tilt adjuster installed on the body. Here are the tools needed and the micro-tilt adjuster (below). Interestingly… while it is called a "micro-tilt adjuster: in real life it s called a "4 claw t-nut" and has been used in furniture building for years. This little device is found in many hardware stores. I bought this one at Lowes. Okay, so my drill bits are little old and rusty, but hey are still really sharp. 8)

Image

The first thing to do is to put a neck plate into position, and then hold it there by some neck screws. This way an accurate mark can be made where the pilot hole will be drilled. After carefully marked, I head out to the drill press with a 1/8th drill bit to make the pilot hole. This will be used to keep the alignment of the other holes. I have an old peeve of Mohair upholstery from when I restored a 1935 Plymouth a few years back. This keeps the body safe from scratches. Do I need to emphasize how careful one has to be in handling a body like this while doing this procedure?

Image
Image
Image

After the pilot hole is drilled I like to use a reaming tool to taper the hole. Next I'll use a drill 3/4 inch wood drill-bit to create a counter sunk hole on the inside of the neck socket so the 4 claw t-nut will be less then flush with the neck socket route.

Image
Image
Image

Next a larger drill bit (not sure of the size right off) is used to open the hole to have access to the allen screw that is part of the micro-tilt system. One has to be very careful as this hole comes very close to the outside perimeter of the neck plate. Making it too big could create an unsightly hole, whose edge would be seen protruding from the neck plate.

Image

On the inside of the neck route I use even the slightly bigger drill bit. This is done to have a hole big enough for the 4 claw t-nut shaft to slide down into. Notice how I mark the depth by using a piece of tape on the drill bit. No reason to make the whole any deeper than necessary. The reason I do it this way,= is to create a smaller hole just slightly bigger than the Allen screw for the back of the guitar and a bigger hole to accommodate the t-nut shaft inside the route. (didn't I just say that?) I simply just do not want to take any chances of making the hole on the back of the guitar to big.

Image

The last thing done is use the reaming tool to slightly taper the hole on the back of the body. I like to try to keep things nice and tidy.

Image

Below you can see the finished product! Oh, I forgot to mention that I drove this nut into place with a fairly large ball-peen hammer. Have to be careful but it does take some force to get those claws to sink into the woods. The wood on this body was particularly hard. Now I am ready to install the pickguard, finish putting the ground wires on the pots, and start working on the neck.

I never seen a triple Ultra with an HHH configuration.

Did you plan making something different based on the Ultra concept without the pickguard and the controls backrouted?

The guitar I'm talking about is a superstrat-style axe with a 2-octave fretboard, an original Floyd Rose trem and three Lace Drop 'N' Gain humbuckers.

Dear Chromeface, I have a partiality toward this style. To be honest I have built a few guitars with a Dually in the neck and bridge with a single coil between. I found that having the Dually in the neck was not all that useful as it did not really produce that many different voices as did a Dually so close to the bridge. The distance from the bridge seems to affect the voice a lot more. 3 Humbuckers would look cool and have some nice 57 Les Paul Custom type look. But I know that configuration would loose the quacky voices so typical of a Strat (aka: out-of-phase single coil tones). So I tend to stay with more of a traditional design. The drop and gain pickups are more heavy metal pickup, from my understanding. Your idea of a back-routed Strat is something I keep thinking about. That might be my next project!

You're not wrong - you can get a complete standard strat plastics kit (less PG) for less than the price of three of either of those. They do look good though. I really like the look of the ali bullets too. Will they work with the chrome domes do you think? They look quite matt finish on the allparts website - that might actually dial the cheese factor back a bit though. Another option might be the fender amp style knobs:

Image

I used these on a mahogany body/black PG/black pup strat I threw together for my wife's cousin, and they looked pretty fly.
