This was really cool to see. I just happened to spend last night drawing a proper electrical schematic (not a paint-by-numbers drawing) so I could troubleshoot the issue I am having with my ultra strat. Perfect timing to see what you were doing while you setup this new guitar.

Can you explain how the TBX is different from the original ultra strat design? I know you made a comment about how you didn't like the TBX always filtering the signal.

Here are the 11 modes I drew out last night for my ultra:

Funny, I just posted wiring diagrams on your thread ( http://forums.fender.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=85045 ) before seeing this post. I think you will find that helpful. I will be posting this same info on this thread tomorrow when I wire up the 5-way switch! The Ultra wiring is a challenge for a inexperienced person, but with some patience and be master pretty easy.

This will be coming up tomorrow when I wire the switch. Thanks!

What camera are you using? Amazing clarity!!!

I use a Canon T2i. Love this camera and bought it mostly for its video capabilities. The problem I have in shooting pictures is the lighting. This guitar workshop is inside of a bigger shop used to work on cars. The lighting is somewhat limited to two windows and varies throughout the day. Then I sometimes shoot at night under the small halogen lights (and often have then on during the day as well) so the camera struggles with a proper white balance.

Well, you're doing a great job given the lighting conditions. I have a couple
of Larson's Reflectasols if you're interested, PM me. I don't use them anymore.

Well lets get that 5-way 2-lug 5-pole Super Switch wired up (think the name could be any longer???) . I am giving a lot more detail this time around than on previous build threads. If you look at the first pict you will see I have the wires from the TBX and the mini switch put together and the wire from the neck tone control off to one side. I wire these a bit different than Fender. They put the TBX on the lower right lug thus having it connect directly to the volume control—affecting all the pickups all the time. (see the digram below the pict). I find this crazy, so I wire the TBX with the mini-switch and then it affects the middle and bridge only. One mixes the two tone controls when the neck pickup is engaged with the middle or bridge. The diagram with give you a visual on what I am doing in this post.

You can see how the TBX and mini-switch wires are braided together and the soldered to the first 3 poles of the right group on the switch.

Image

Next I take the neck tone control wire and put it together with an extra pace of wire and solder it to the#s 4 & 5 lugs of the right bank. The extra wire will be a jumper over to the center lug on left bank of connecting to the neck pickups.

Check out the roach clip, I mean hemostats. (Hey, those days are long gone!) 8). I use them to keep the ground wires in place so they are out of the way. The 2nd pict below shows the middle pickup being wired to the 2nd lug on the left back with a small jumper wire that goes over to the 4th lug. WIRING THE SWITCH IS DONE. Now for those ground wires!

Image
Image
Image

I will remove the hemostats and solder all these ground wires on the volume pot. I always use a audio pot to control the volume as it tapers the sound more evenly and slowly as you turn the knob. Note the the right lug on the volume control is bent over and is touching the body of the pot. I will solder these together for a ground along with some black wire to connect all the grounds on the pots (another post down the road!)

I like to clean things up with some nylon ties. Since this body has a vintage route, I had to try to keep the wires centered to make putting the pickguard on easier.

Image

Her are some of my favorite amps. Pretend you do not see that guitar in the center (Ok, ok .. this is a Fender Forum!). I also use a Crate Vintage Tube 50 that has a 15" speaker a lot. Heave but sounds great. The snow is melting enough that I could even take my doggy to the river last Saturday! More to come

I was able to get the pickguard to fit after a little tweaking. Man it is taking shape and I believe the black Ebony on the Ultra neck will set it off even more. I have a chrome plated Ultra bridge on the way too. This one is taken from the standard plus guitar.

So tell me—what do you think of using 52 Telecaster knobs? Does it look too cheesy???? Or should I used Black knobs instead?

For me, it would be the classic black buttons, but you do as you want, but it is a great subject that you offer us here!
Good luck and soon afterwards!

I'm kind of leaning towards using the black knobs for two reasons, one) I like being able to read the numbers of where my settings are at while I'm playing. 2) The chrome Tele knobs standup really tall and I don't like the looks of that. I think the more subtle black knobs with white letters would do much better. Any last-minute comments that like to convince me otherwise? :? :? :?
