I guess this flamed beauty will feature a mini Floyd Rose bridge.

Hey Jeff: I know you will take it the right way if I tell you you have a beautiful body. :D

By the way, I'm looking at the way the paint goes into the spring cavity on the back but not the cavities on the front. So do they finish it first, and then route the pickup cavities as per the customer's order? If so, it's amazing to get away without cracking the lacquer round the cavity edges. That's highly interesting.

Oh man: he's bound to show up on this thread sooner or later. We all know what will happen: he'll post all his usual stuff, we'll all ignore it, it'll be reported and deleted and he'll get yet another ID banned. As usual - yawn yawn.

Carry on, X-Man. The Force of the Forum is with you.

Cheers - C

I would think a solid colored pickguard would look best. Given the visuals of the flame, I wouldn't need a patterned pickguard to distract myself from it. I think a B/R/B would look best. RED pickup covers to be different!

Ya, thanks for the ideas. I had a friend email and mention that I should do something else beside the black pickups like I have done on some of the other guitars.

Image

So now I am thinking about using Chrome Domes, as they would look nice with a Black/Red/Black pickguard. Can't remember ever doing that combo. So if you can imagine something like the guitar below with a Black/Red/Black guard, that is what we would have.

Image Image

I did consider using a Fender Floyd bridge but the cut on the route is a bit too small. The last build where I used a Rose and a Warmoth body I had to file away part of the route (See guitar below). It was a pain, so not sure I will pop on in this build. Also with the black ebony fingerboard on the Ultra neck it will highlight the black on the body. More picts to come soon.

Good observation Mr bond. (AKA Ceri). Ya I found that odd on this body, as it looked like the routing was done after it was finished. Really clean how they do that. I have found that some they route after they are finished, some come pre-routed and then finished, and then some or modified after they are already routed and finished. Make sense??? LOL. Any way they must have super sharp router blades to cut that clean. And the wood? Man is smells great. The Ash smell is really strong when you get your node close to that route! I am a sucker for various types of wood grain and scents!

Hmm...yes, something different from black pups would be cool, but we trust your instincts...and I kinda like some of these:

Oh Yeah, logged in this morning and found this thread. Like a present you really wanted!

I'd like to see chrome knobs with the chrome domes.

That's an interesting question. How much weight is saved with a chambered body? Would it lessen sustain or, possibly, add mysterious overtones? :)

Ah, a man who smells his timber. Excellent - respect! 8)

Only one thing better than that, and that's tasting your guitar timber. Mmmmmmm... (There's a story behind that, but I'm probably too bashful to tell it. Eh, The_Nutter?)

Hi danagos: yes, I like that look too. Normally we'd choose Tele type knobs, because the silver Strat ones tend to be plastic with a metallic coating and that somehow always looks cheesy. However, there's also these:

http://www.wammiworld.com/p8003.php

Those are chromed solid brass and they really look the business. Oddly, as far as I know WammiWorld are the only seller of them. And they're surprisingly pricy for a few ol' knobs. Stylish, though...

Well, decisions, decisions. Took out the black/red/black pickguard and started looking at pickups. I had these Black Lace Sensors in mind. Red, Burgundy, Purple and Gold for a variety of voices. BUT, since a friend and a few people on the forum suggested something different, I will go for 2 Chrome Domes and a Hot Chrome Dome Dually. Think the chrome look will offset the black/red of the guitar in general.

The Moab Haunting  Hmm...yes, something different from black pups would be cool, but we trust your instincts...and I kinda like (Duncans)

Mr Miami, Moab eh? I have been there many times and spend a good part of my summer and fall 2012 down there in the Grand Canyon, Bryce, and Moab areas. Yes the colors are reminiscent of the mesas at sunset! Also, I love Duncans too, but my forte is the Strat Plus series, and since this guitar has an Ultra neck, I wanted to keep the Ultra type of pickup configuration. Maybe Duncans next time!

Speaking of necks, this 1991 Ultra neck is very clean and the Ebony board should go well with the black/red of the body and pickguard. Someone changed out the Chrome Ultra Wilkinson Nut to a LSR replacement. Guess I will leave that there. I do have 2 new old stock Chrome Ultra Wilkinson nuts BUT they are made for .09 strings, and if you are like me, I use .10s most of the time and do not like being locked into .09s.

The first thing I will do is drill the Dually pickup holes. I really do not like how most people mount a humbucker in a Strat by using two very small screws and springs. :? The pickup often flops around loose and gives a cheap, unprofessional feeling to the guitar. The Dually's traditionally are mounted with 3 screws, 2 one one side, and one on the other. New Duallys are mounted that same way, so when I get my ordered in from Lace, I request single pickups and then use a small bracket to bolt the two pickups together. (I will show these close up later). This is the other reason I like using the Dually in the bridge. By having two separate pickups, one can use that little mini-switch to have them run separate or in series. So off to the frill press to drill the holes, using a Fender Ultra pick guard as a template to make drilling easier.

Next step is to run your finger over the foil on the back to expose the pot-holes and switch mounts. Take a razor knife and simply run it around the hole cutting away the foil and you are ready to build. (Is this boring yet  )

Image
Image

Components consist of a 2-lug 5-pole Super Switch, 250 linear and audio potentiometers, a TBX tone control and a on/on/on mini-switch (not shown). Next I will take you step by step through the wiring process. I have done many of these so there are a few tips I can give you that will make it less painful if you give it a try!

MORE TO COME SOON!

I get most of my pickguards from Warmoth. They have a great selection of material and fit perfect. More to come soon.

LOL, well truth is, I bought the body after watching Warmoth for a few months, looking for one that I really liked the look (and cost!). After I ordered it and paid for it, I saw in the email Warmoth sent, which described what I bought, that it was a chambered body. I have not weighed it yet but find the idea—interesting. :o
