After the last thread I don't know whether to believe you or not... Is your Am Spl a 2012 or 2013 model? (US12 or US13 serial number?)

Haha I know, it's like the boy who cried wolf.
Nope this one is totally true.

Serial number is US13002025, so the '13

I just packed it all up again in case I need to ship it back somewhere, and I want to reduce the chances of them saying it's "damaged" and pull a classic big business move.

Complete images of it are here:

You can even see that squier strat from my previous post in the pictures so you know its real.

Fender TSL? Where are you?

I think you should call Fender or your retailer and ask for an RMA number (Return Merchandise Authorization number) and for them to cover shipping the guitar back for a replacement. Since you are still in a return grace period, I would not wait for your guitar to be repaired if I were you... I would just demand a complete replacement.

I ordered my CAR Am Spl from Guitar Center four Sundays ago and I received a 2012 model. It appears to be perfect however... no fret buzz, intonation is good. I am not even going to get a setup until I need to change the original strings anyway.

Might also post something on the Fender Sale-a-bration sticky post. Brad Traweek seems to be monitoring it very closely and I bet he would respond with the best way to get a proper Am Spl in your hands as soon as possible without another dime out of your pocket!

Aside from the ticking sound, remember the Greasebucket tone circuit is the wiring for that guitar. A bit different from what you may be used to.

This is why I suggested not ordering by mail. This has happened so many times it's just not even funny. Not bashing Fender here, just seems to be something about mail order in general.

I've called around a bunch and most people aren't very helpful.

However when I came back to it, the clicking/buzzing sound had reduced dramatically (I have no idea why, don't ask me, it just DID).

So I started playing it and it sounded fantastic. I can still hear it if I blast the volume and listen really closely but its much less frequent than in the recording (one blip per 10 seconds sorta thing).

Almost as though it needed to be 'broken in'. I know thats not a thing but thats kinda what happened.

Anyways, I remembered I'll be returning home next weekend which is within the 30 day period for returns. Beside my town is a decent L&M which can do repairs. I will bring my guitar home with me even if the buzzing is completely gone, and get them to check it all over.

The greasebucket thing was (I think) what was responsible for me thinking my pickup switches were wired backwards. So in the end it was 1/2 my fault, 1/2 fenders (there is DEFINATELY something wrong with the wiring), but its barely noticeable any more. But I didn't pay almost a grand for a barely noticeable ticking sound.

So I'll get it serviced, while its under warranty and in the return period. Worst case scenario I get a new guitar, in-store, and can try it before I buy it. School is ending soon so I'll have more time to work this all out if necessary at the beginning of my summer (Late April).

Anyways, like I said, worst case scenario I get a good guitar, it will just be a matter of time. In the mean time, I'll keep playing and see how much the annoying sound goes down and keep you guys updated.

Thanks for all your help!

Cheers,
Nick

Consider investing in a really good cable. There may be issues with yours. Also make sure the nut securing the cable jack is not loose.

What town do you live in? Long and McQuade are very good dealers and will look after you. The last 4 guitars I've bought I got from them and they offer a free set up within a year of the purchase date, at least they did with me.

On reviewing his original thread..Advice on buying a new Stratocaster, it appears that he placed an online order for the guitar through L&M, thus I would hope, and expect, if their reputation is as you suggest, that they will resolve the matter in good faith. It will simply be up to him to find his way there.

Yeah, I bought through Long & McQuade.

As I said above I will be taking the guitar in to get serviced once I travel home (because I'm currently away at university in a small town called Kingston. Not really remote, but not really 'big city' either, so we don't even have an L&M here).

Anyways, ZZ, I already tried multiple cables into my amp with multiple guitars and here's the data:

MIM TELE + CABLE 1 = No buzzing sound
MIM TELE + CABLE 2 = No buzzing sound
MIA STRAT + CABLE 1 = Buzzing Sound
MIA STRAT + CABLE 2 = Buzzing Sound

I tried putting everything through pedals as well, and only got the sound coming from the strat, but as I said, its mostly gone by now but I will have it checked out by L&M next weekend. Good thing is, It'll probably have to remain there while it's serviced for a longer period of time then I am home. Therefore I'll be going back to school without a guitar so I can focus on studying for exams.

Kind of a blessing in disguise I guess :P

Cheers,
Nick

Kingston isn't that small, I live a little over an hour west of Kingston. Try the Kingston Guitar Shop or Center Stage Music, they are both good shops if you can't wait to get to L&M. Even better, take the VIA to Oshawa and visit L&M there on Simcoe Street. L&M stands behind what they sell and if your not happy they will exchange it or fix it.

I would definitely stick with the vendor of record in this case.

Unfortunately I think there's actually something wrong with this guitar.

I plugged it in and tried it out at various volumes....

There is a sound that sounds like a Geiger Counter is coming through my amp -- like bad wiring. As I switch between pickups you can hear it more or less, and it seems to be not as bad when I do positions 2 or 4. Listen to the sound here:

https://soundcloud.com/steelydanick/str ... er-counter

And also, as I switch my pickup selector so its CLOSER to my neck, I get more treble-ish sounds. Is it backwards between tele's and strats? On my tele I have 3 pickups and as I move the switch closer to the neck, the sound becomes less bright and has less tone.

Almost as though the insides are wired backwards, and poorly wired.

What a let down... any advice/support here? Should I ship it back or call Fender?

Nick

Easier way to check which pickup is activated is to tap a pickup pole piece with your pick and if you hear it through the amp, you know its backwards. Also, the pickup heights may need adjustment. But if its a simple wiring problem, anyone that has a rough idea how to handle a soldering iron could fix your problem. Have you removed the pickguard and checked underneath? Any pic's of that? We can help you if you did. Pictures speak volumes here.
