Hi Guys,

Just wondered how everyone sets up thier strats...does anyone have a weird setup or do you keep things factory setup..how do you have your action? high or low? pickup height, trem height etc..just thought it would be interesting to see how you have yours. I was reading a page on the stewmac site re setups of famous guitarists..quite a bit of variation in each one...which of course is down to individual tastes and style etc...but made for interesting reading.

I set mine up exactly to factory spec. After 42 years of playing, and setting mine up that way forever, it just feels right and works the best for me.

Two set up like the Clapton. Two with a floating bridge.

Always the same Ernie Ball 9-46s.

A fairly straight neck with a bit of relief no more than 0.25mm.

1.5mm action on both E strings at the 17th fret (only for 9.5" boards, 7.25" would be 2mm).

The trem floating with 4mm between the body and the bottom of the trem.

Pick ups set to the recommended heights.

Strap locks

and nut sauce on every point on the guitar that contacts the strings.

Plus all of my Fenders have to have rosewood necks, a 9.5" radius board, a modern C profile and 9150 fret wire.

I just tried a middle pickup only tone for 2nd pot and kind of like it on one particuliar Strat.

The others vary from stock to extremely 'tricked out'.

1996 SRV Strat
always laced with GHS Boomers 11's
Bone nut and frets leveled
Bridge flush with guitar top with 5 springs for the trem
Trem cavity cover removed
Tone knob for bridge pup
Cap on volume pot (single best mod IMO)
Pups set low
Action slightly high...I guess
A bit of relief in the neck
Sanded(lightly) the back of the neck to reomove the gloss

I keep the action about where Fender recommends and I also use extra tremolo springs to pull the tremolo flush against the body and adjust the intonation accordingly.

I've loaded mine with 5 springs and lowered the saddles as much as possible. I like the ability to change tunings without too much fuss and have always used my fingers for vibrato, so I've never really liked floating tremelos. Of course there's some vibrato you just can't do with your fingers alone, but I still think it's a fair trade off.

All have blocked tremolos. Action set as low as possible without buzzing/dead spots. Lower action makes massive difference when bending 12s!

I use D'Addario 9-42's.

I like flat necks with very little relief.

Somewhere between 1.5mm and 2mm at the last fret, 21/22/24 (does not matter).

I tolerate very mild string buzz on the lowest registers if using a heavy pick attack... but a very light attack shouldn't buzz at all.

Not all guitars can be set-up the way I like. My preferred setup will show any imperfections in neck warp, fret lifting, worn frets, improper nut height, etc... I'm very picky about how I like my action.

Almost all my guitars have Gotoh Floyds set to pull up 1.5-2. If I buy a guitar with a Floyd and I want to keep it, it gets replaced with a Gotoh.

Most of my guitars are set for Eb standard, though I have a couple set for drop C#.

That's about it really.

I like my Strats all set up fairly close to the same way. Factory spec or close to it for relief, maybe just a smidgeon flatter but not much, fairly average action, not high, not low, I run my pups a little bit lower than factory spec but again, not by much. The only real difference between any of them is that some have the bridge decked and blocked and some run at a 50/50 float. My floating trems also get the angled claw treatment. I find it helps tuning stability.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

For me 10/49 for the strings, saddle bone, vintage bridge, but floating (not easy to adjust!) Action set for the minimum radius (7.25) and alnico 5 pickups single 5.5, 5.5 and 5 , 8 bridge for a vintage sound.
Changes require time string (30mn) to reconfigure the floating bridge but once in place, the use of tremolo is not a concern and filleting of the bar is envellope Teflon to prevent rocking.
My guitar is never row and remains permanently on its support for as soon as I take 5 minutes to play.
Thus become the olympic white is yellow but it increases his side vintage :D

I set mine up a bit different from the guide.

For strings I use 10s, i play mostly in standard.

9.5 Radius neck (.010 relief) measured at 6th fret holding 14th in lying down position so its probably a bit more than this.

Tremolo is blocked off with wood, String height measured in playing position at the 12th fret is 4/64 each string from bottom of string to top of fret.

I like all 3 pickups at 6/64 treble, 8/64 bass

I sand the bottom of my replacement nut to be (.020) from bottom of string to top of first fret on the low e, the rest follow the radius down to (0.12) on high e.

I have also done the master tone mod.

Slightly higher action on mine, DR 11s Pure Nickel preferably. 5 springs keep the tremolo on the body.
