so my high e string broke a week ago. i took all the strings off my strat and went the next day to get some new strings.

I put on the Ernie ball regular slinkies like i do allways, but i took the moment to put im my new pickups (SD ssl-1 set).

But now my strings are buzzing... :( i tried to adjust the action on the trem, but it didnt improve it enough to be worth the lost of the great action and playability....

should i relieve the truss rod, because my guitar was without strings for 1 1/2 days and the truss overcorrected the straightness of the neck?

Did you change string gauge?

You should always recheck the setup of a guitar after a string change regardless of whether you changed gauges or not. I would suggest doing a setup as described here:

Hi treav0r,
You also mentioned that you changed pickups. Check Pickup height to strings as well. Magnetic pull can produce "buzz" as well.
Cheers,
rob

the pickups are pretty far in (from pickguard to polepiece < 1cm) , so that should not be the problem.

i did not change the string gauge, they are .10s like before...

Like I said, redo the setup. Something has obviously changed.

The most important thing that nobody has yet to mention...

You need to play/break-in the strings. This takes an hour or two of playing usually. This is because brand new strings still have a lot of elasticity and need to be stretched. They're the opposite of dead, they're too alive. This is pretty much normal if you have mid to low action. If you are familiar with the Floyd Rose and stretching strings until you reach tuning stability, this will help accelerate the break-in.

Hope that helps! :P

i have the strings on now for 3 days and approx. 8h of playing, so that should not be the problem. i get buzzing on all frets and especially on the low strings... maybe i must trade off some of the good action... :(

Nope, you should just do the full setup that's mentioned above.

A good point to start would be to measure the current setup before any adjustments.

Just redo the setup and quit complaining. Jeez.

Any string is going to buzz if you hit it hard enough with any reasonable action height. Do you hear the buzz through the amp or only with the guitar unplugged? If you don't hear it through the amp, don't worry about it. If you still do, then the guitar is still not set up properly and maybe you should take it to a pro.

Learn to play proper chords...
:P :P

More seriously though, Rob Schwarz, who knows a thing or two about Fender guitars, probably pointed you in the right direction but I think you might have ruled out his suggestion too quickly. You say the pole pieces are <1cm from the pickguard, but that's not really a meaningful measurement. The real question, as Rob asked, was to check how far the polepieces are from the strings.

Were the pickups you replaced also staggered like the SSL-1s you've fitted? You'd be surprised at the effect the pickup magnets have on the strings.

Another question - you haven't by any chance switched from 'standard' EB Regular Slinkies to the Cobalt ones, have you? That would have had an effect too.

SSL-1s are staggered and use Alnico 5 magnets. Pretty strong string pull if too close. But given the OP says the guitar is only buzzing when the strings are hit hard, I doubt it is a magnet pull problem.

Do you bend a lot? If not, you could still be picking excessively hard and still not breaking the strings in properly, just saying... and how long did you have your last set on? They might just have been very dead... new strings don't sound anything like old strings...

And a string change shouldn't need a setup. And, you shouldn't need to adjust your truss rod if you left your strings off, I've had guitars sit as parts for months....

When you remove all the strings off the guitar at the same time, as you do to install new pickups, the neck can go a bit out of adjustment. It happens a lot, actually. All the tension goes off the neck, and things can go goofy. I would tune the guitar to pitch using a reliable tuner, then take out a capo and a feeler gauge .010 will work. Put the capo ON the first fret wire. Hold the low E string down at the 17th fret. Measure between the bottom of the string and the top of the 8th fret wire. Watch closely. If the feeler gauge lifts the string at all, you'll need to relief the neck (loosen the truss rod). retune, check again. When the feeler gauge goes in without slop, or moving the string--as in just so-- then the relief is correct. Without seeing your guitar in person, I would guess the neck has a back bow and the strings are closer to the frets because of it, this will cause a rattle. When the relief is dead on, recheck your string height with a metal ruler, try setting the height per Fender's guidelines. It it still buzzes, you could need a fret level, a check of a shim issue, etc. Good luck to you.
