Good morning guys,
I'm a beginner and am shopping for a used Stratocaster,
Can someone pease tell me how to determine where a given guitar is built ??
I understand Stratocaster have been built in the USA, Japan, mexico, Korea.
Also what does "HSS" mean ??

Hi and welcome.

Place of origin is indicated on the headstock with a simple "Made in USA", "Made in Mexico" or whatever.

HSS refers to the pickups: humbucker - single-coil - single-coil.

Cheers

Yes, sort of. I know it's summarized someplace but the detailed info is here:

http://www.fender.com/support/usa_instruments.php

http://www.fender.com/support/mexican_instruments.php

http://www.fender.com/support/japanese_instruments.php

Basically MN or MZ as the first characters means it's Mexican. After that it gets more complex although anything with Z or DZ is American.
