I've been thinking about buying an EJ strat and came across this site this morning:

http://www.gearhounds.com/search.aspx?find=eric+johnson

I'm looking at the 2 tone sunburst. Before I order I wanted to see if there is any reason to be skeptical about the authenticity of the guitar. It is a registered Fender dealer (at least the bricks and mortar store is) and my research on-line raises no concerns. However, the price seems awfully low when teh guitar is placed in the cart, they claim it is signed, and when you click the view button there is no tremolo bar. I'm new to all of this, so any advice is appreciated.

Hi Kilgore Trout: as you know, we can't possibly guarantee a guitar beyond doubt from small photos on a webpage, but for what it's worth I see nothing to question in the guitar you're interested in on this page:

http://www.gearhounds.com/fender-eric-j ... burst.aspx

It looks like a perfectly kosher EJ Strat - including Eric's actual hand-written signature on the back. They obviously had him in the store and asked him to graffiti the guitars for them. If it floats your boat then that's nice; on the other hand it doesn't really change the value any, as you see from the asking price. I believe $1799 is about a hundred less than Musician's Friend want for the same model: it's a handy discount but not so much as to raise worries, as far as I'm aware.

If you like it, buy it, is my unscientific opinion. It sure as heck is a nice model Strat, that much I do know from experience! :)

Cheers - C

Thank you for the responses. When I place the guitar in the cart, it actually ends up at $1494, not $1800. Does that still seem within a reasonable range such as to not raise a concern?

Also, does the tremolo not come installed when it arrives from the factory?

As to the signature, I don't have an interest in that (though my wife thinks it's cool). Frankly, I'd rather not have it, but I want the sunburst finish. I figured it has no effect on value.

I appreciate the input from those with more experience with these guitars, certainly recognizing nobody can provide a guarantee!

Oo - that's sounds like a nice bonus! :)

I'm not in your part of the world, Kigore Trout, so I don't know how things work there. Could it be something to do with not paying tax across a state border or similar? I'm talking off the top of my head on that: maybe someone else knows or has actual experience of Gearhounds.com and can tell you knowledgeably what's going on.

Or you could just ask the shop about it - the risk being it's an admin error in your favour and if you point it out they'll slap the price back up to $1799.99. It's a dilemma...!

It's up to the shop whether they feel like screwing the trem arm in for displaying the guitar in store, but generally speaking the arm comes packed with the rest of the case candy (strings, cable, etc) and not installed in the instrument. You mostly have to remove it to put the Strat in the case, so installing it is usually something you do when you've dragged the geet home. Some stores even just reach into a drawer beneath the counter for a trem arm to give you as you pay - once in a while you need to make sure they gave you the right one!

I wouldn't sweat the arm thing. It ain't a worry.

Nah, it does nothing for me either. Though if it was already there I might think it was quite fun: the shop might have a story about how they come to have signed guitars, if you feel like asking.

It may be that the sig will rub off with guitar polish, depending what kind of pen Eric used to write it (indelible or not). Some types of ink are made to come off with spirit, others with different kinds of solvent. Some not. Something to be aware of, whether you particularly want to keep it or lose it.

Anyhow. It's a really nice Strat. Enjoy!

Cheers - C

I've done online layaways with Gearhounds and have been very satisfied with them. I doubt they would misrepresent the guitar. Their sale prices usually beat most other online vendors..

I have played the E.J. Strats and like them, the sig is the least conspicuous of the sig series...
I think the E.J. is really a wolf in sheep's clothing as it is ( for Me ) a versatile work horse.
