I decided to turn my current 2003 HH Fender Strat into a HSH. What I really wanted was a double humbucker Strat that would also have that classic Fender sound to it. So I decided to put a single coil between the two humbuckers.

I decided on two Duncan Alnico Pro 2 humbuckers for the bridge and neck, and a gold Lace sensor for the middle.

I got the pickguard, and Lace sensor off eBay; the Lace sensor only cost me 30 dollars and was new so I was happy about that. I got the humbuckers from www.zzounds.com and the electronic parts from www.stewmac.com.
After about a month of planning and ordering that parts I was ready to start building. I took pictures the whole way through.

I used an AllParts pickguard and shielded it with copper tape:

Installed the pots and 5-way switch. The middle pot is a push/pull.

Wired the controls and installed two Orange Drop capacitors. Caps are .02uf and .033uf.

Installed humbuckers and Lace sensor.

Removed the old pickguard. I was so happy my Strat was already routed for HSH.

All finished.

Here is a shot of the neck tone push/pull switch in the up position.

Hey, thanks for the comments. Yea, it was a fun project, but it is much more fun to play then work on. This is one of the reasons I favor electric guitars, you can have different sounds with the flick of a switch. I just decided to add some extra sounds to mine. Next im gonna look into series wiring options, maybe convert the other two pots to push/pulls.

Very nice project!

That stock body routing certainly serves a multitude of sins vis a vis the company's design options. (Beats the old swimming pool rout for sure.) However, I certainly hope it doesn't find its way into some of the 'vintage' stuff. It certainly wouldn't be such if not routed SSS.

Now about those two small circular routs just below the neck pickup rout. First I've seen of that. What is the 'whatfor' on those?

My 2005 has one of those holes under the 'guard, plus another in the neck pocket. I'm presuming it is to do with automated positioning during the CNC routing process...?

My theory is that that's where they hang them during the painting process and someone didn't do it right so they had to make another one.

Yea, I have no clue what those two circles are there for. But I can say the Alnico Pros sound good with the Lace sensor. The mix of the two sounds very glassy. The Lace by its self sounds twangy like most Fenders. The Alnico Pros sound a lot like the old Fender humbuckers, deep and full, great with distortion, lots of harmonics. I would post a sound file but im not sure where to host it.

Very, very nice! I've done a couple of these myself. Here's a pic of my favorite one... it has all Hot Gold Lace Sensors though. And SO much fun to play...

Ohh NOOO! I'm not the only one! lol I have noticed that there are very few Fenders guitars out there with HSH setup. I think they used to sell Squires with HSH at one point. Is it a Fender or a Squire? It looks like it says Bender from the picture lol, I dont know why. You should post more pictures of it on the pictures thread we have going.

So how do Lace sensors sound as humbuckers? I'm guessing you had to get RWRP Lace sensors for the two dummy coils?

It actually does say "Bender." It's my own custom made headstock decal. That neck is one of those Warmoth "licensed by Fender" necks which are sold without decals.

The Hot Gold Lace Sensor Duallys are great. They are quiet enough that you don't need to mess with RWRP. They are fat but very pure and typically with more high-end than most buckers.

Here is a recording I made with that Strat...
