I was wondering...

I have a 2006 American standard stratocaster and want to know about how well the finish wears. I love that beaten in look on a strat (kinda like John Frusciante, SRV, whoever) but I don't like the idea of having it taken to a shop so some dude can take sandpaper to my guitar. I feel if it happens naturally it shows your dedication to the instrument. The time dedicated to playing it and what not.

I read somewhere that the finish used doesn't wear easily to keep it nice and new looking for all of eternity (not literally, but you get my point).

I play my strat constantly. If I go anywhere, it's right by my side. It almost never leaves my sight. So after a couple of years of literally constant use, I'd imagine there being some wear on the finish.

Anyway, is it just me being too gentle with a beast, or is this finish indestructable and the only way for me to get that wear on the finish to bring it into a shop and have it done for me?

Thanks a bunch for any input.

Hello Wescott,

Yes those finishes are quite durable,
it'll be a while before any natural wear
will take place. Personally I like a low
maintenance finish to keep thing looking new. :D

Nature has managed to inflict itself on my
guitars over the years.

Cheers.

Me too. I was devastated when I got my first ding on my 2005 - a tiny cymbal strike on the neck, but too deep to remove. Curse your malign influence, Pete Townshend. My baby has a blemish!

Relic - pah!

I'm one of those guys that takes care of all my things to an obsession. Just so you know where I'm coming from. I have a four year old MIM Strat that I've played the heck out of. Jam bands, practicing, etc. I always wipe it down, take all the sweat off, and from time to time, give it a coating of guitar polish. Well....I have to tell you.......it still looks like it just came out of the box. So I don't know just how much abuse it will take to get the look that you want. They ARE very durable. The only wear that I've had is that I really wore out the frets (I just had the frets dressed). But the body, neck and finish must be related to the Eveready bunny.....just keeps going, and going, and......well......you get the idea.......
