Hi all,

I've been lurking here for a bit and found this to be a very informative forum. I'm very excited about joining the Fender world. I've messed around a bit with guitar in the past but have never seriously pursued it. Have played piano for a long time. I recently purchased one of the 2012 Fender select HSS strats. Beautiful guitar both in pictures and in the flesh. Sounds amazing. I unfortunately had to return my first as the varnish was flaking at the skunk stripe were the neck meets the body. No big. My replacement was shipped directly to my house and is a beauty. The guitar had definitely been opened previously as the factory box staples were removed. The guitar is otherwise pristine with all plastics in place and everything in the case. I decided to overlook this fact and even ignored a tiny scuff on the G & G case as it wasn't a really big deal. 2 days later I noticed a metallic sound near the bridge when I would turn the guitar upside down and sometimes if it was quickly moved in any direction. I've read about pieces of solder or even other artifacts of manufacture under the pick guard or within the tremolo cavity. Should I be worried? It's sporadic. Am I being too compulsive or not enough. Since it has a beautiful pattern on the body and is otherwise fine, I'm scared to send it back. Your thoughts are much appreciated. I bought my 8 year old daughter a mini Squire strat and we're looking forward to guitar lessons together! :D

Hi 2005VMMM3
Welcome!
Well...could be a few things....hopefully NOT an "artifact" but honestly thats not neccessarily way out of the realm of possibility.
Could be the bridge springs perhaps being stiff and moving a bit.
Another thing...although less likeley, there should be a little spring in the tremolo hole itself (where the arm goes) and perhaps that's pinging around.
If it is an artifact of some sort....it might be a good idea to loosen the strings......put a capo on the 1st fret, take off the pickguard screws, and oh so carefully lift the pickguard up to see if anything is floating around loose in there.
Hope that helps a little.
All the best and again, welcome.
rob

Has anybody seen my gold tooth? I must have misplaced it the other day when I was inspecting a new Strat that I later returned because it was too beautiful for me...

I had a similar situation, had a noise from something rolling around under the Pickguard. Removed the Pickguard and found one of the washers from the tone pot hadn't been installed and was rolling around.

Wow  ...welcome to the Forums. First at bat and he hits a home run!...an up close and personal from Rob himself. That little trem bar spring has been a real nuisance in its long life. Let's hope that's all it is. Keep us posted.

Welcome to the Forum. Lots of good folks here with tons of info they are willing to share. Let us know what you find with your guitar. And we have a rule here (unwritten of course) but you have to post pics of your guitar...we love pics here and everyone enjoys what we refer to as guitar porn!

Thanks for the kind words all. Sure enough, I hadn't removed the sticker covering the tremolo hole. When I got home from work this evening I decided to give it a go and sure enough when I had removed the sticker and turned the guitar upside down... a small metallic spring hit the ground. Home run indeed!!! Rob hit clocked it. Unfortunately no treasure, gold teeth, or other good stuff fell out... or fortunately. The sound is gone and I feel quite a bit better that there wasn't something else in there! Now the other million dollar question... Does that spring belong somewhere? I screwed in the tremolo and it worked fine. Thanks again for all the kind words. I will be posting pics soon!

Guess I should have searched before I added that question. Immediately a bunch of threads about the dreaded tremolo hole spring popped up. Problem solved. Much appreciated. I am quite the newbie. My brother in law gifted me a mid 80s Les Paul Studio which has been languishing in it's case. It may be time to take that out and send it to my trusty local guitar tech to get it up and running. But the difference between that guitar and this Strat is night and day. Friends have advised me that a Strat is a great guitar to start playing on. They weren't exaggerating. It just has an amazing feel. I picked up a Swollen Pickle pedal and a TS 808 reissue. I have a reissue Ampeg Jet 12 from the mid 90s. I'm really like the sounds of that set up and can't wait to learn more. :D

Ya...the spring belongs in the bridge's inertia block where you found it. It's adds resistance to the vibrato trem arm without the need for overtightening to keep the arm from spinning 'round.
