Well folks, now that Fender has begun the new era of Vintage guitars based on the odd years like 65 and 59, I wonder what will become of all those parts left over from the years of producing the AVRI 62 and 57 Stratocasters? Well I have one theory... have you looked around on e-bay? or other sites it seems there is a huge amount of parts out there from body to neck to pickups to pick-guard.

I bought my 62 RI in 1986 new. It has been the nicest Stratocaster I have owned next to my Stolen 74 hard tail Olympic white. There AVRI guitars were made to a high quality standard. My quandary is, if I were to buy another Vintage Reissue Stratocaster 62 or 57 would I be getting the real deal or a Japanese or Mexican reproduction of that guitar? No way to know. There is little known about where all those parts come from. I was going to buy a replacement neck from Stratosphear an (ebay) store and asked them very politely where they get their parts from, hoping to hear, old Fender stock or Fender Parts or guitars purchased and taken disassembled or something and never got an answer. This kind of raised a flag and I didn't buy the 850.00$ replacement neck for my 62!
Anyone have any comments on where these left over parts are going coming from or if these Vintage reissue offered around are authentic or not now that Fender has stopped production of them? Any one know the last year of factory production?

Replacement parts, or recycled for some other project guitar out there...

Well for one thing I'm sure Fender had no left-over parts - I would really be surprised if (except for the pickups which were sold as sets, and any electronic part like switches, pots, etc. that is still in use) that they didn't plan their production down to the last body and neck being assembled. Also usually MIJ and MIM parts have different codes, different routing marks, and a few other keys that differentiate them from USA Fenders.

As long as you purchased your AV '57 from a reputable source you should be okay - there are years where Fender didn't write the dates on the AV necks, years where they didn't use the serial number decals, etc. Now if it was a private party sale then who knows; as long as the guitar is from 1993 or later Fender can verify the serial number and at least tell you if your AV '57 matches up. You don't say the color, but for example if your's is black and Fender says that number matches something other than a black AV '57 then you could have some kind of parts guitar. They can be reached at consumerrelations@fender.com.

These places like Stratosphere get a lot of their parts by buying used Fenders cheap off of ebay, craigslist, dealer closeouts, etc. and part them out - sometimes there is more money in parting out a Fender than in selling it whole.

Great Information, My AV 57 is a two tone sunburst kind of like the current Buddy Holly model. The seller I bought the guitar from on eBay had a 100% feed back rating and had sold many outstanding looking guitars, however did not have the coveted ' Authorized Fender Seller' logo.

I will post a photo of it... and thanks for the email to find out about the body color match up to the serial number on the neck plate. I was mostly thinking it was original until I noticed that sellers out there are even selling Neck Plates for them with the V# stamp then I really got worried.

The AVRI's were discontinued last year, replaced by the new AVS series. As for "leftover" parts, the only purpose-built components for the AVRI's were the necks, bodies, and the 57/62 pickup sets. Everything else, by and large, was standard vintage-spec Fender fare of the type used since the first Stratocasters were released for sale in 1954. These parts have always been available for sale, both as accessories direct from FMIC and on the secondary market. It's no shock that so many Strat components are listed on Ebay -- it's the most prolific and popular electric guitar ever made.

Arjay, that makes a lot of sense. I agree about the number of parts out there, especially in Ebay. I find it overwhelming and that is why I just wish I could buy a replacement neck from FMIC for my original 1986 AVRI 62 Strat. That would answer the question of: Is the neck I'm buying real fender or a put together part from a rip-off artist on Ebay. I would have a re-fret on the 62' but got one quote that was over 800' from a guy in NYC, that I do trust and he PLEX. There are many techs here in NJ that do it but I have not had good luck with them even just doing a setup. The last guy did a fret leveling I had a low fret (#1 so my D chord in first position rattled bad) and I told him not to adjust my trem, and get it back and he lowered my action and tightened the trem to the body... :(

Wonder if FMIC still will sell a neck?

Giving this topic some thought, it would be really nice if us guys on the forum could report our experiences with some of the online vintage' parts sellers. There are probably many out there that want to build a project guitar and are looking for these parts. I myself am still very skeptical about buying anything other than, hardware. Anyone recommend any specific sources they have tried and been very satisfied with on the internet?

:?

This seems a bit convoluted, and makes no sense. If the parts were "left over" from Fender, then they would be genuine Fender parts, so no reason for a buyer to beware. However, I doubt if Fender sold these parts to anyone, and further doubt that they would be for sale on eBay.

More than likely, any parts that Fender had left would be used on other Fender guitar models.

This is probably what happened to the '57 and '62 reissue models, as Fender so often does, the production of them moved to Mexico. Note that these models are much like the '57 and '62 reissues, just have different names and maybe different pups, and possibly cheaper hardware.

I should have said parts and guitars sold as Vintage RI I cleaned it up. I think the post would make little sense if we lived in a perfect honest world. I agree they are probably FMI however, the quality AVRI 62;57 Fender line has now become so diluted and there are huge amounts of parts sold on eBay from people parting out existing guitars -they purchased, I guess? Trying to make more money on the parts than selling the entire guitar. Which is now creating/adding to the huge cluster of miss matched guitars and necks out there. I can even buy a back plate for the neck with the V+5 or 6 numbers slap it on a MIM or a CIJ body and would folks know the difference? Maybe? Some might some might not. Then you combine that with the two Classic MIM Lines -(links you just posted)... think it is time to look at a 65 AVRI ...LOL :) thankfully I have my 62 and 57. I guess as long as Fender doesn't offer the Two-Tone SB as part of the Classic series we're safe for a little while....
