The various Fender noiseless pickups get the same kind of criticism.

I guess the lack of noise equals lack of character to ears that are used to the noise. It's weird.

I suspect for the same reasons.

The Cool Guy online or at GC said so. You want to be a Cool Guy, too, dontcha? So you say it too. Pretty soon everybody "knows" that maple is 'brighter' than rosewood, any amp wth EL84 power tubes sounds "Vox-y" and noiseless pickups have no "soul."

I suspect that most people who claim to hate these pickups have never even played a set. I also have this crazy idea that gear doesn't provide anything but a characteristic signal... heart and soul come from the player. If you're out trying to buy some of that, you can stop shopping right now.

This choice wasn't listed, but my favorite replacement pickups for a Stratocaster are Pete Biltoft's Vintage Vibe SP90.

Voiced like a P90, but you still retain the spank, sparkle and chime of a Stratocaster. Little or no noise (gorgeous HEAVY copper shielding), cloth wiring, and reasonably priced (I paid $119 on e-bay).

Also, Pete's a great guy--he answered phone calls, voicemail and e-mails. He also helped me by getting me in contact with an electronics guru for a new wiring scheme for my Telecaster.

I have never really liked EMGs or DiMarzios, but I do like some of the Seymour Duncans out there.

...but Vintage Vibes rule the roost, for as I'm concerned.

I put a SD hot rail in my strat for a while , sounded decent but I decided to replace the stock p/u's and hot rail with a set of lace (red, blue, silver)...bad move. I didn't like the lace set at all. Now waiting on a wired pickguard with Dimarzio Area 58/58/61 combo.

As the owner of somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 to 60 pickup sets, I would agree that there is no one best. If I had to vote for one of the three, I would give it to Seymour Duncan, just because I have had better luck with his pickups. But if I was to recommend my favorite pickups, my vote goes to the Hot Gold Lace Sensors. They are very quiet (although NOT completely noiseless), they are TRUE single coils, they are very dynamic, they dial-in very easily, they tend to work extremely well with all sorts of mods, and they just sound great (IMHO, of course). And the Hot Gold is not a "HOT" pickup, as many seem to think. They do make two models, but the regular one is a 6k (mine are all 5.85k) which is very typical for a vintage single coil. Then they make a bridge model that is 13.2k, but I honestly prefer the 6k model at the bridge because it sounds so good there, very unlike many 5.85k bridge single coils.

I've been playing Hot Golds in various configurations for over 6 years and my opinion has never changed. They are loaded in 3 of my Strats right now... and that's pretty good odds when I have over 50 sets to choose from.
