My personal opinion is that if those are my only choices for an electric guitar, I'll play an acoustic.

I have tried probably every decent pickup brand on the market in my Strats. After MANY years and MANY different pickups, I've finally come to the conclusion that the DiMarzio Area 58/58/61 combo is the absolute best for a QUIET, balanced, vintage sounding Strat.

I don't think there's such a thing as best pup. I do know that choices here don't scratch the surface of whats available out there.

I like the SCNs that came in my Am Deluxe. My opinion is that EMGs are soulless, the same sound whether they're in a Strat or an LP. The others are nice, but if I wanted that sound I would have bought a guitar with them in the first place. FWIW, my favorite pickups (if I take into account all my guitars) are the Gibson Classic '57s in my SG. That still doesn't mean I'd put a set in my Strat or Tele.

This is your third thread about pickups (in the Stratocaster forum?).

Have you read any of the suggestions in the other threads?

Which are the best of the one's that you know about? That's a pretty short list and a solid example of why the poll option should be turned off. It's subjective. Maybe you should do some research and find out why it's subjective.

It's true that there is no "best" pickup, but because I use EMGs (the SV 'Strat Vintage' model) in my main guitar, this comment always bugs me.

Different models of EMGs don't even sound like each other, let alone sound the same in any guitar. Yet, the "soulless" and/or "sterile" (I guess as opposed to soulful and dirty) riff gets repeated over and over, often by people who have never even played a guitar with EMGs in it.

Armadillo, what frequencies should be cut or boosted to produce "soul?" Can you describe the frequency curves that produce more or less soul?

Given, time, equipment and motivation I could produce the frequency plots that could characterize the differences and given the characteristics I don't like about them I suspect that an FT would be more useful than just a straight frequency plot. I doubt that it would do anything to define which ones had "soul" anymore than it explains why tube amps tend to be preferred when solid state amps produce a more accurate reproduction of the guitars sound. To me the EMGs I've tried lack the dynamics I'd like to have - there's virtually no difference in the sound (other than volume) between playing them fingerstyle or with a heavy pick. It's like an on off switch, you have a tone or you don't and within a given pickup model it's always the same reqardless of how you strike the strings or where you have the volume or tone controls. So maybe I should have prefaced my statement with "For the way that I play ..."

Well, that's an inaccurate assessment, too. No pickup I've ever encountered works "like an on/off switch," and the EMGs I've been playing for over a decade certainly don't. They are extremely touch sensitive. As for sounding "the same reqardless of how you strike the strings or where you have the volume or tone controls..." that's just pure eyewash.

Not very experienced with pickups, but I do love my Dimarzios, especially the ToneZone humbucker. I think if I upgraded again I'd stick with a H/S/S setup but go with more vintage-voiced single coils and keep a higher output humbucker.
