I'll play devil's advocate here - if you play live regularly in electrically noisy venues or record a lot, go for the noiseless without question.

Once you tweak your amp slightly (always surprises me how many people don't when swapping pickups!) to suit, the difference between them and conventional single coils really is tiny when sat in a mix or played loud, and that's coming from someone who keeps colour coded bits of tape on his cables to file them according to tiny differences in top end rolloff.

From experience, I know that an audience (and other musicians, sound people, roadies, and other random people who hang around musicians, such as drummers) notice hum, buzz and noise a hell of a lot more than they notice the finer intricacies of vintage style wire and magnet. It's also quite surprising how much that buzz and hum interferes with the voice of your instrument, too - it doesn't just disappear when you're playing. Shielding helps a lot, but you'll never kill all the noises if you use single coils.

Go out and try some guitars with both types of pickup in - pickups are an intensely personal choice, after all. One person's holy grail tone may come from a set of Fat 50's, someone else might get theirs from a set of EMGs or a couple of nails wrapped in fence wire - experimenting is half the fun.

Personally, I really like noiseless pickups - once all that extraneous noise is gone, I relax and play better, which is worth more to the overall sound than a billion hand wound pickups.

That said, if you play just at home or aren't as stupidly OCD about noise as me, go buy yourself a set of Fat 50's and find that mystical playing angle which brings beautiful electrical silence, and enjoy them - they're awesome too. :D

That's kind of funny. I used my Tele with P90's at band rehearsal the other night. I don't usually have much noise problems with that guitar. I don't know if it was the room or amp I was using, but I found if I stood in one spot, facing a certain direction, they were quiet. But damn, it's hard to do that for very long. I need to go into GC and play the Fat 50's and pay attention to the amount of noise. Otherwise they sound like great pups. Thanks for the tip.

The fat 50s are sweet, they've made me a fan of single coils.
