Hi there,
I currently own a Peavey Vypyr 15w and an old '80s amp which has 80w,
I'm currently looking for a new (tube) amp to match with my American Standard Strat which has the standard Strat pickups (I know it isn't the latest model, but I'm quite fond of it  )
My budget is about 500 euros = 400 dollars
Any suggestions??

So you have an American Standard Strat but your amp budget is only $400.

Take two asprin and call back when you have an amp budget that matches what your guitar budget was.

Sorry. That might have been a little rough.
I just get frustrated by how common it is for people to buy a pro-grade guitar and then insist on playing it through an entry level amp.

It all depends on what you play and who's tone do you like. Oh, and how much money do you want to spend.

Do you want the amp to provide the dirt? Marshall, Mesa, Vox, Egnator etc...

Do you use pedals for dirt? Then Fender Blues Jr, Deluxe Reverb, Twin, Bassman

Then you have a multitude of amps that model other amps like Fender Mustang ,or Super Champ. Line 6 Spider, Acoustic Amps, etc...

Personally, I would save up another $200 and get myself a deluxe reverb reissue. They can be found in that price range on Craigslist from time to time.

I buy used gear all the time. Be on the the look out for used amps, you'll save 30% to 50% plus that way...

I use Line 6 Spider Valve with mine. They come in combos and half and full stacks.
They are full sized stacks designed by bogner all tube and are used everywhere.
They are easy and have every designer amp programed into them.

I personally have owned Marshall JCM 800 and JCM 900 100 watt stacks
Carvin Tube Stacks, Crate Blue Voodoo stacks and Randall Stacks to name a few.

The Line 6 spider valve is better because it has every other amp in there.

Its got a vox a fender a marshall a mesa a dietzer you name it its in there.

Bet you can find a 2-12 combo used at a Guitar Center the foot controller really expands it also.

If you are into solid-state modeling amps but want more power than your Vypyr 15 watt, you might consider a Fender Mustang III 100 watt which can be easily had at your budget. Or a VOX Valvetronix series amp.

In the tube dept... a used Fender Blues Jr. or maybe a Hot Rod Deluxe. I love my new-to-me Peavey Delta Blues 210 and have heard nothing but praise for the other Peavey Classic series of tweed tube amps as well. If you are buying just for home use you wouldn't need any tube amp over 40 watts.

I am assuming, JUST assuming, you would not have bought a Fender Strat with standard single-coil pups if hi-gain amps and heavy metal were your thing.

I had the pleasure of trying out a Fender Blues Junior yesterday with an American Strat, it was really nice.

The clean tones were fantastic, very clear. The amp didn't drive very hard if that is your thing, but you could always run a pedal through it if it isn't enough for you. It did break up a bit when you turned the gain right up, and still kept all the clarity from before.

Not you are not too rough . We must put more money for the amp than the guitar. An American Standard cost $1200 new , spend at least $1200 for the amp new if you want to heard the sound / tone your guitar can deliver.

If you want to buy another amp in 6 month put less money on the amp now.

Considering how many modern recordings are cut using smaller amps, I would not buy into the whole you must spend a ton to get great tone.

I have been able to play thru a lot of great amps over the years and in the old days it was true that you had to have enough wattage to project above the drummer and bass player. With todays sound systems that is just not the case.

I recently purchased the Fender Super Champ X2 and just plain love it. Loud enough to be heard in a small club, yet controllable enough to record on. The clean channel is pure tube and has a great old blackface sound. The other channel has a digital modeler stuffed between the tube stages and gives some amazing tones.

There are a few videos on youtube which show what these little amps are capable of. In particular try to find the one of the guy playing Pink Floyd thru a Super Champ SD ( for runner to the X2 ). It will blow you away with what this amp will do.

Oh and I have an American Strat Plus with the EC mid boost in it, this amp gives me all the tone I could want.

The guy playing Pink Floyd with Super Champ SD , he use a telecaster . If it is the same you talk about ? I see the video.

IMO , I hear it is only a Super Champ SDI not bad but I don't ike it.

I've been playing guitar for more than 40 years. I've tried it all. Solid state amps, hybrid amps, modelling amps, entry level tube amps, mid grade tube amps, pro grade tube amps, low wattage, medium power and big power.

Big or small, there is no substitute for a great amp.

None.

Whatsoever.
